I have just learned the word “prestidigitation” and I am beside myself. Are we serious. Have we actually put together a combo of “presto” and “fingers” that sounds like A Serious Word. Get it together, English.

Still getting used to having a car with a backup camera. Today in the school parking lot I shifted into reverse and saw a dad kiss his elementary school son on both cheeks and the forehead before giving him a bear hug, away from the gate where the teacher and other kids could see them.

I was nervous about how my “all right everyone, we are not gonna let them win so get out a pen and a piece of paper” approach was going to go over but to my surprise they’re more than down.

You would think finding him would be easy, as he is making a deafening racket. And yet.

There is a cicada in our basement, pining away at the top of his metaphorical lungs.

Overall, all I lost in this process was one nice tea towel, a Sunday, and my predisposition to trust sweet little old ladies.

We have also been officially notified that deep dish is now his real actual name, so everyone is happy about that.

(updates/pics are a negotiated condition of the bird’s surrender to the pigeon rescue)

Well anyway no thanks to her, deep dish has had a good meal and this is him taking a nap:

Eventually, she hits her absolute limit and decides to drop deep dish at the park and then when her grandkids return she can tearfully let them know he didn't make it. I bet she's got a fake grave in her backyard and everything.

Catherine Hervey @cfhervey.bsky.social · 06/07/2026
I have spent some time thinking about this and I've decided the most likely scenario is that this woman's grandkids were hand-raising baby deep dish and went on vacation for the long weekend, leaving him with grandma, who slowly cracked under the pressure.

Catherine Hervey @cfhervey.bsky.social · 06/07/2026
HAND RAISED BY HUMANS. This means that the woman who dumped deep dish on the girls and peeled out at the park hadn't just found him and assumed he was abandoned and in dire straits, she had RAISED HIM thus far and GOTTEN TIRED OF IT?

Catherine Hervey @cfhervey.bsky.social · 06/07/2026
I get a picture of him and a text that he is settling in well with the volunteer, but that--plot twist--he was very clearly hand raised by humans.

I send her to the right house, where possibly no one is home but she can just open the back gate and take the pigeon, who is now in a cage under an apple tree. My daughter's friend is convinced to surrender deep dish for adoption, though this is not easy.

Catherine Hervey @cfhervey.bsky.social · 06/07/2026
I get home and hear from the pigeon rescue. They tell me a volunteer will be in touch with me. Maybe an hour later I get a text that says "I'm at the station." It is the pigeon volunteer, who has been told I am waiting for her with the pigeon at the local train station (I am not).

So I do a u-turn and we take the bird to their house. They get it drinking from a dish and start looking online for the right kind of food. With desperation in their eyes, they both, separately, assure me that if I hear back from the pigeon rescue to let them know.

Catherine Hervey @cfhervey.bsky.social · 06/07/2026
Right well I was a block away from the park with the bird in a box in the backseat on the girls' laps when the other mom calls me to say her children are not going to be able to emotionally handle abandoning this creature to what they are smart enough to know is certain doom.

Catherine Hervey @cfhervey.bsky.social · 05/07/2026
I thought we had them convinced but my daughter's friend took her dad off speaker and continued the phone call alone in the study, so who knows.

Catherine Hervey @cfhervey.bsky.social · 05/07/2026
We have the other dad on speakerphone and are trying to convince the girls that maybe the lady found the pigeon in the park! and maybe we can just put the pigeon down somewhere and its parents will find it! I'm not sure they're buying it though.

Catherine Hervey @cfhervey.bsky.social · 05/07/2026
We could simply return this perfectly healthy, normal bird to its nesting area if this crazy lady hadn't peeled out of the parking lot without telling the girls where she found it.
120
Catherine Hervey @cfhervey.bsky.social · 05/07/2026
This pigeon is perfectly fine and healthy except for the fact that it is now separated from its parents. PSA, people: if you see a fledgling bird, leave it alone! It's fine! Unless it seems injured and needs help, its parents are still taking care of it.

They gave me a number of a place called Great Lakes Pigeon Rescue. I left a message on Instagram but this is a holiday weekend, so like... Meanwhile all four children are bonding with the pigeon and have named it Deep Dish.

Update. Have called the wildlife rescue and texted them a picture. It is definitely a pigeon.
120
Catherine Hervey @cfhervey.bsky.social · 05/07/2026
I can call the wildlife rescue but I know them of old. If this is a pigeon and not a native bird they won't take it.

I mean, to me it looks like a pigeon. The lady said it was a baby mourning dove but I'm pretty sure she's wrong. They brought it home and we put it in a box and... now what.

Catherine Hervey @cfhervey.bsky.social · 05/07/2026
My daughters and their two friends were playing at the park and some old lady came up to them, asked them if they were doing anything important, and when they said no handed them a fledgling pigeon and drove away.

Oh so did they train their product by stealing the work you did without asking permission or compensating you and now they’re gonna try to replace you in the market with that thing they trained by stealing from you? Wow that must really suck.

10yo has decided we need a family party, so she's set out snacks and made a playlist for us to dance to. The playlist: All you Fascists Bound to Lose -Resistance Revival Chorus 22 -Taylor Swift Mother Freedom -Bread Shiny -Moana The Helldivers theme song A Drop of Nelson's Blood -The Longest Johns

I grew up with one of these! My mother called it a bottlebrush, which I have just learned thanks to this post is entirely incorrect. Persian silk sounds so much better. I loved that tree.

Granta, you… you asked CLAUDE if the story was AI generated and then…told us all that you did that? And you have quoted Claude’s “conclusions“ to us directly…as though it has something important to say about this situation? I am being elaborately trolled. There is no other explanation.

After some deliberation, my husband has decided that the reason the rabbit we just babysat for a week appears to have more personality than our guinea pig is the fact that he has a neck.
