"Hosting major events always gobbles up public resources that could otherwise be directed toward pressing needs, while host cities under pressure to sparkle on camera often violate residents’ rights." My piece for Common Dreams:

It's pretty quiet here at the Ecuador-Germany "Kick it in the Park" watch party in MacArthur Park. Those who are here are mostly hiding in the shade under trees or tents, leaving the large designated Viewing Area almost empty except for one legend who brought their own shade.

Every team should be refusing to play until all of Iran's team and support staff can travel and stay freely throughout the World Cup host countries.

Hmm. I thought the World Cup wasn't supposed to impact regular @metrolosangeles.bsky.social service. But the 212 isn't running between SoFi Stadium and the 2 nearest Metro stations for 4 hours when today and Sunday's matches wrap up. Isn't this the exact bus we want fans to take to the train?!

Buses from Union Station to SoFi Stadium scheduled every minute ahead of Switzerland v Bosnia-Herzegovina? A transit dream! But how much are we paying for this?

On June 2nd, non-tenure-track faculty at USC voted by a 70% margin to form our union. Hundreds and hundreds of USC alumni are signing on to a petition urging the USC administration to respect our vote, withdraw their objections, and bargain. Add your name at tinyurl.com/uscalumnipetition

Last night, 800 people came to Echo Park Lake to see the Argentina vs. Algeria game as part of 100 watch parties being staged in city parks. Today, LA's City Council is voting to doom the city's parks department

10 years after the Rio 2016 Olympics, the city is planning to build Latin America's largest data center hub on and around the Olympic park site. Ugh. Great article by RioOnWatch rioonwatch.org?p=83259

LA World Cup sponsor Archer Aviation got its ad in prime position for people entering the Coliseum. The fanfest also featured an "activation" site with a model aircraft. Key to know: Archer Aviation partners (proudly) with Palantir & Anduril, whose tech enables US State violence here and globally

Welcome to the LA FIFA fanfest where a beer is $19 and a water bottle is $7. And remember these are prices for watching the game ON A TELEVISION.
