The videos were slick and polished, featuring employees talking
about how excited they were to work on the game and how
incredible it would be.

“This story is a middle finger to tropes,” proclaimed Troy Baker, a
prolific voice actor who briefly worked as performance director on
the game. “This takes everything you're expecting from a typical
action-adventure story and says, ‘No. This one’s different.”

It was standard promotional fare, the sort of grandiose marketing
campaign you might expect alongside a newly released game to
motivate fans to go and buy it. But Last Sentinel was not newly
released. It wasn’t even close to being released. The game had been announced two years earlier but did not have a public release date. Lightspeed, a subsidiary of Tencent Holdings Ltd., had hired a large team of industry veterans but had never shipped a game before.

Nobody had even seen actual gameplay footage from Last Sentinel, as players pointed out in response to the videos. Wrote one YouTube commenter: “When this game first got revealed, it gave me a ‘looks like a game that will go years without seeing any kind of substantial gameplay and fall into Development Hell’ impression. They’re not exactly beating that allegation here.”

The comment proved prescient this week, as Lightspeed laid off 80 employees and announced that it was planning to “shift the creative and development direction” of Last Sentinel “to meet player expectations.”

I won't link to CBR since they're consistently an embarrassing rag, but 10:1 this whole article was LLM generated. Strange New Worlds *did not* recast Spock. Spock, like Captain Pike, was cast in Discovery before SNW ever came about. #StarTrek #Paramount
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is directly tied to its predecessor, but it was much bolder with its narrative design. The showrunners took bigger risks, resulting in increased ratings and a more positive critical consensus. The franchise also began to recast early characters like Spock, who had already made such an impact. It was time to refresh the franchise, and that's where unusual ideas came to the forefront.

This is a wild assertion. People have been using gyro aim on the first version of the Steam Controller which released over 10 years ago to replace mouse aim on first person shooters. There are HUNDREDS of community layouts for the Steam Deck for games that have no controller input whatsoever.
Finally, it’s the Steam CONTROLLER. As brilliant as it is, it doesn’t reinvent the wheel, so if you don’t usually play PC games with a controller and you’re hoping this might be a gateway, don’t count on it. Valve may have been claiming in interviews that the touch pads and gyro aiming bring it close to a keyboard and mouse experience, but in reality that isn’t the case.

In the midway we can see a concrete and blocky desk that looks like a reception desk with rust-colored monitors. The lobby has a large rug with the pattern from the hotel carpet from The Shining.

To the farthest wall there are three entrances labelled with bright red LED signs. From left to right, "EASY" "NORM" "HARD"
Screenshot from same FPS game. The scene is bright with a blue sky. to the right there is a body of water next to a cluttered beach, the body of water appears to be green and toxic. In the distance we can see odd structures like tall square spires topped with floating concrete spheres, and strange carved faces on its flats. Further in the center view we see a hollow circular tower made of brick, and large holes in its faces allowing us to see inside.

part 4 cont.
What most gamers actually want are games that run at a consistent framerate and a sharp resolution, with consistent lighting and art design, on hardware that doesn't require us to remortgage our house, using technology that doesn't necessitate turning the world into a Mad Max wasteland. At least, that's what I want to play, and that's what I intend to continue making. I don't know if DLSS5 is going to be here to stay or not, but it's heartening to at least see so many of us in agreement. This is not the direction we care about, and it's not the technology we want to pay for, and hopefully if we're all loud and insistent enough, and we throw the weight of our wallets around, companies like Nvidia will eventually get the message. That or this will simply be the newest in a long line of features that indie developers don't have to use, and the indie and AA scenes will continue to provide a wild variety of visual styles that don't require thousands of dollars in hardware to render.

ALT TEXT now that I'm back at my PC
First of all, who asked for this?!

This isn't even DLSS! Please tell me what generative Al has anything to do with Deep Learning Super Sampling - which is what DLSS actually stands for in case anyone forgot. They're hiding this Gen Al bullshit behind the DLSS moniker because they think we're stupid. "Hey you guys like DLSS right? You know that thing you turn on that gives you a blurrier picture and higher frame rates? You love that! Anyway this is what DLSS does now. Wow! Don't you love it?!" They know if they called it something like "Nvidia Generative Upscaling" the public backlash would be immediate and intense. But unfortunately for Nvidia, even if they call it “DLSS 5” we all have working eyes and can see that this is exactly what we think it is.

"But it's optional bro!”

You know what's not optional? Paying more and getting less - which is what we've been doing with Nvidia for years now. Enough is enough.

The only thing we can do besides calling them out on it and making them feel bad is voting with our wallets. Cripple their sales, tank their stock price. Stop collaborating with them as developers. Then maybe they'll think about going back to giving us what we want. More visual processing power and more value per dollar for technology that *SHOULD* be getting cheaper with every new innovation, not somehow more expensive while we get less value and our games somehow look worse.

We as developers and players need to push back against this bullshit just like we did with NFTs and crypto games and try in vain to do with predatory micro transactions, loot boxes and battle passes. The thing is, this doesn't really affect us! I have no dog in this fight other than being a PC Gamer. We make retro bloody indie games. Sometimes we even remaster them (for free) and then hire the artist that did the remaster! We've only ever released one game that we put DLSS and RTX into (Amid Evil) and it was a huge pain in the ass, arguably made the game look worse, and didn't get us any extra sales. But it was a fun experiment and Nvidia sent us some free GPUs for our trouble. Yippie.

Nvidia has always been on the cutting edge of stupid experimental bullshit. As they should be! Remember 3Dvision? That was a bust. The Shield? I've still got mine somewhere. PhysX? That was costly but it sure was cool as hell watching concrete pillars dynamically explode into pieces during shootouts in Mafia 2. (That tech was rolled back in the "Remaster" by the way - thanks 2K.) RTX and Path Tracing are more costly than anything we’ve seen before - but I'll be damned if they don’t make Cyberpunk look good. Frame gen? I'd say the jury’s still out on that.

But this is more than just experimental bullshit. This is fundamentally changing the way video games look based on artificial intelligence that's been trained on Instagram models and Epstein memes. Are you serious? You used to have to spend hours poorly modding your games to make them look this "cinematic" and now Nvidia is going to let you do it for free! Just kidding, it'll cost like $5,000.

At this rate why make game art at all? Why not just draw some shapes and colors and let Al generate what it thinks it should look like? After all, who cares. The only thing that matters is “realism” right? That was sarcasm.

And would you look at that, | got through this whole thing without saying slop once. But I'm saying it now. Because it is. It’s Slop.

Come the fuck on.I agree with everything Dave has said (including about physX, that was awesome back in the day).

The core problem here is that DLSS5, per Nvidia's own showcase video, looks like shit. Even if we set aside all (relevant and valid) concerns about artistic intent and generative Al itself, the lighting and contrast it adds (or removes, in some parts) makes scenes look less realistic and believable and more like one of those alpha chad Breaking Bad YT shorts with the contrast and sharpening cranked up. So what exactly is the appeal here? That, once again, we're expected to applaud a few shuffling steps to the right and left like it's forward progress? We're supposed to be happy that for the low low cost of two high end GPUs and never buying RAM again, we can zap our favorite videogame characters with the Jeffree Star-inator and make every game environment look like an overcast UE5 marketplace scene with half a dozen fill lights? It especially sucks seeing it showcased in Resident Evil: Requiem, a game that exemplifies quality and passion in AAA game design. Seeing Grace and Leon getting run through the slop filter as a "victory lap" definitely feels like insult and injury combined into one.

"But it's optional!" You mean optional like upscaling? You mean optional like temporal AA? Optional like realtime GI? Optional like any number of "optional" features that anyone who has played a AAA game in the past half decade can tell you aren't really optional, because games are now built to lean on those technologies. The past I-don't-even-know-how-many years of graphical "advancements" have been a massive disappointment, where framerate, visual clarity, responsiveness, and affordability are the price we've paid for tech that theoretically some day we promise will look great, just so long as you don't pay close attention to all those artifacts or the ghosting or how much input latency you feel, or how blurry those moving leaves look, or the screaming noise your GPU is making, or the price or RAM, or the impending global water wars, or the...

Stuff like DLSS and TAA and raytracing are starting to pay off, but it's been at an immense cost to the clarity, accessibility, and playability of the games that use them for years. And while I'm not a graphics tech expert, I'm still not convinced that they've solved many problems that didn't already have solutions. Solutions with their own downsides, for sure, but with upsides as well. It's not like there haven't been new major downsides introduced over the last few years. And as a gamer I'm personally sick of continually paying more and more money for lateral movements in rendering, just so | can run new games with some base level of playability. This is just a bag of salt getting poured on the existing thousand cuts. Nobody is asking for yassified Grace. Nobody wants their games to look like Italian brainrot. And, for that matter, nobody wants a fucking glorified autocorrect painting over the work of actual human beings making actual art, which is an opinion that's been run into the ground by every one on social media but which should continue being run into the ground until the people pushing generative Al into creativity and entertainment get it through their heads that we don't want what they're selling. Go use that shit in medicine, security, and the many other avenues in which LLMs could be an actual benefit. We don't want it in our art. We don't want it in our games.

Book cover and excerpt: "Play Nice" by Jason Schreier, with the subtitle "The Rise, Fall, and Future of Blizzard Entertainment." Cover features bold blue text.

Book excerpt:

Not all of Blizzard's employees took to the intense office culture, such as Andy Weir, a programmer who hated being dropped into the pressure cooker. The day before he left on a weekend trip for which he'd provided weeks of notice, his bosses criticized him for taking off, then demanded that he leave them with a phone number. "Over the course of the weekend they probably called me twenty times," Weir said. "And I was not an important engineer." During the game's final stretch, when everyone was expected to test out the game during their spare time, Weir complained to a colleague that he was sick of doing extra QA work and not getting paid for it.

Weir became the target of endless bullying around the office. Colleagues would dismiss him, ignore him, and deride his ideas. "So many people were shitty to me, I have to assume I brought it on myself in some way," Weir said. He was criticized for delivering inadequate code that broke the game's launcher, which made things more difficult for everybody. He'd fume: How could he live up to expectations when nobody was mentoring or teaching him? There were no structures in place to help younger employees learn how to fix bugs or

write better code. "We were so busy running as fast as we could, there was no culture of mentorship or training," said Wyatt. Less than a year into the job, Weir was fired for his poor performance. "This was a dream job for me, working at Blizzard," Weir said. "I was absolutely crushed."

But Andy Weir wound up doing just fine. Two decades later, he published a novel called The Martian, the film adaptation of which would star Matt Damon and earn more than $630 million worldwide.

I would've loved to have tried a Commodore, everyone of the time spoke of them so fondly. At the time we only had a TI-99, probably because Texas Instruments got in a price war with Commodore, to the point that TI were practically giving them away. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TI-99/4...
Texas Instruments PC, TI-99/4A with beige case. It looks a bit like an electronic typewriter, but the right side quarter of the case is taken up by a slot that accepts cartridges, and there is a power switch on the bottom right. Attached at the right side is a metal box labelled the speech synthesizer.

I called that they'd never bring Ashly Burch back to play Chloe, lol. Like these people would ever hire a union actor and pay people livable wages. This whole studio is basically fired after this releases, btw (former employee recounting on reddit from last year)
"It is Double Exposure 2, with a more likely release of 2026. DE2 was part of Square's contract with Deck Nine for DE. It was never not going to be made.

Also Deck Nine is laying off every department one at a time after they finish their last work.

Animation -> Design -> QA -> Engineering, one at a time, until the game is out. Mark Lyons, Jeff Lichford, and Stephen Frost were not able to secure additional projects, so they will tear out the entire dev team in the hopes of finding a way to survive later on.

"Post the first game you actually completed" I grew up on arcade and Atari games which often didn't really have an ending so much as repeating levels, or if they did you couldn't get to it without dropping $20 in change. So this was basically my first console game with an actual ending.

Every time Hank disappoints me with one of these I get more and more convinced he doesn't know what those words mean. Forget that democrats consistently funded ICE when they had all the power in the world to abolish it. Forget they still won't commit to removing it. Forget Biden supported Israel.
Post from Hank Green: "I yearn for the days when the differences between liberals and leftists mattered."

Response from employees, care of People Make Games. Screw R*
FORMER ROCKSTAR EMPLOYEE

"This decision to fail to award IR is a gut-punch to everyone legitimately engaged in Trade Union activities. The real world consequences of this are forcing valuable people to leave this country, upending their families and destroying their lives, all because of the actions of a ruthless uncaring employer's quest to crush a Trade Union. We'll continue to fight to clear our names, regain our jobs and put an end to this chapter of our lives.

Throughout all of this, the bonds we have made with those who were unlawfully fired have kept us all strong. The kindness, compassion and dedication we have all shown to each other is heartwarming and a reminder that we are all fighting for workers rights. This decision, while not in our favour, is not an exoneration of Rockstar's behavior and actions. Merely a stumbling block on the road to justice."

This is so very much a "that immigrant wants your cookie" moment. Trying to make the focus on "that woman has so much money to spend on shoes" rather than "why don't we ALL have that much money to spend on shoes (or anything else)?" No mistake that the target is a woman of color, either.
Painting of a rich old white guy sitting at a table between a laborer and a black man, the rich man has a plate full of cookies, the laborer has a plate with one cookie, the black man has nothing. Rich man looks to the laborer while pointing at the black man, caption: "Careful mate, that foreigner wants your cookie!"
