39 more Universal-controlled movies hit digital today for the first time ever. Some of these have never had a disc release before. Check 'em all out at this link: www.universalpicturesathome.com/collections/...

I think there's something to that, but I also think that collectors trained the labels to do exactly what they are doing. The mainstream bailed on discs when streaming arrived. Collectors wanted premium editions with slipcovers, steelbooks, posters, art cards, etc. and now that's almost all we get.

Cereal At Midnight @cerealatmidnight.com · 23/09/2026

I think some of these studios think making the releases feel more collectible and premium is the way to go (Steelbooks, limited slipcovers, lenticular art, etc), but I can't see how that's better than affordable standard releases available from a wide array of retailers.

It's nice to see Disney returning to normal releases that aren't Steelbooks or limited editions. These two Robin Williams classics are obtainable on multi-format combo packs for all who want them: Dead Poets Society: link.amazon/B00dGa9z8 Mrs. Doubtfire: link.amazon/B079y9Ulr

It was originally to be called simply "Dementia" because it was a "Psycho" pastiche, but there was already a movie with that name. Corman added the 13 because it's an unlucky number and also because William Castle had recently had good fortune with his movie "13 Ghosts."

He’s a total icon. Before he became famous as a a painter, he was doing sequential hand-drawn art on monthly comics during the 1950s.

To your point, I don’t know if we’ve ever talked about this, but I strongly suspect both of the new-ish Ghostbusters movies were created using ChatGPT. They follow the beats, storylines and set pieces of the first two too closely.

Fire and Ice is a collaboration between four giants: animation titan Ralph Bakshi, master illustrator Frank Frazetta, and comics icons Roy Thomas and Gerry Conway. Now this 1983 sword and sorcery adult animation masterpiece comes to 4K in Blue Underground's very first Steelbook! youtu.be/IuExnqBqeE0

For what it's worth, I liked the trailer too. It has good production design.

010

Cereal At Midnight @cerealatmidnight.com · 31/05/2026

I thought it was mediocre-to-bad. It has a germ of an idea that it doesn't know how to explore. If you've seen Being John Malkovitch and The Blair Witch Project, there's not much here that's new. But any criticism of this movie is met with Star-Wars-level rage by Gen Z kids who think it's genius.

110

Cereal At Midnight @cerealatmidnight.com · 31/05/2026

Ah, I see. Yes, in three days, Backrooms has come out, made more money than the new Star Wars movie, and the conversation around it has immediately become toxic on the internet. The only time I've seen this much rage directed at opposing opinions is...well, Star Wars.

I would very much welcome more films with cats!

010

Cereal At Midnight @cerealatmidnight.com · 31/05/2026

You'll probably be hearing a lot about it. It looks like it's going to dethrone Star Wars at the box office and appears to be a harbinger of things to come.

Cereal At Midnight @cerealatmidnight.com · 31/05/2026

I haven't seen Exit 8, but I've heard that it's both really good and really tedious simultaneously.

010

Cereal At Midnight @cerealatmidnight.com · 31/05/2026

It's only been 36 hours or so, but I'm already sick of the discourse around Backrooms. One day, a movie will come out that doesn't ignite furious debate. Today is not that day. (But...I might still make a video about Backrooms and what I think it means for the future of mew-vees. Maybe.)

The folks at Sony just sent over their brand new 4K Steelbook for the new #Anaconda movie. As a fan of the original, I did not care for this reboot (my review: cerealatmidnight.com/2026/01/revi...), but this #steelbook really does capture the spirit of the new entry and looks good.

I saw that statistic too. It’s cool to me that people want to support the artists. What makes me said is all these young people listening to records on terrible turntables they bought at Urban Outfitters. They may never know the warmth of how it should sound.
