How to lie and flip-flop all at the same time: 🖥️ Eric Jones in Sep 2026: We need data centers & we need them in the U.S. 🩴 → Eric Jones on Oct 8, 2026, LWV debate: I've always supported a moratorium on data centers See also: rosietheboomer.substack.com/p/in-ca04-wh...

Spot on mailer from the Mike Thompson campaign. It explains very clearly why the citizens of Congressional District 4 should be voting “no“ on Eric Jones. And thus “yes“ for Mike Thompson.
This is the front side of a mailer that explains how Eric Jones‘s campaign is funded by dark money interests who build data centers that drive up water and power costs. This is the backside of the mailer. It states simply “they get the water. You get the bill.”

My letter to the editor, published in the Davis Enterprise: the case for voting for Mike Thompson over Eric Jones in CA's District 4 congressional race, in less than 350 words. It's an easy choice. Vote for Mike Thompson. ✅ www.davisenterprise.com/forum/letter...
Would you vote for a congressional candidate who had endorsed a variety of Republican positions while at the same time touting his progressive credentials and connections to candidates like Ro Khanna? Someone who: advocated for “immigration reform” for a “secure border”, said he was “ashamed” of Prop 50, called for “sunsetting” federal programs, donated to Republican politicians including a member of the Bush family?

What if you learned that he had, in a very short amount of time, flip-flopped his views on important issues such as data centers and Medicare for All? What if you found out that he had distributed two versions of the same flyer on the same block of the same street, one for Republicans and one for Democrats?

What if you further learned that he had no political track record to back up his ever-changing political promises? That he been a partner at a Silicon Valley venture capital firm for 8 years (12 in total), allowing him to dump $5 million of his own money into his campaign? And that on top of that, former colleagues and associates from the same firm continue to dump millions more into his congressional campaign, including a Super PAC, a legal but shady way to skirt campaign donation limits? (If you’ve been deluged with mailers, flyers, and intrusive texts, now you know why).

Citizens of Congressional District 4, the candidate described above is Eric Jones, recently resigned from Dragoneer Investment Group. He would represent the interests of out-of-district tech oligarchs — resisting needed protective regulations at every turn — rather than the interests of ordinary citizens, whether Republican or Democratic.

What if you were to further learn that there was another candidate, Mike Thompson, who has seniority and thus power to wield in the House, who has a proven and known political track record, who has deep roots in our district along with military service, who has legislative accomplishments in areas as diverse as affordability, climate c…

Citizens of CA-04, please do *not* vote for Eric Jones. In his desperation to unseat Mike Thompson, he is showing us more and more who he is—certainly not a progressive and not someone who can be trusted....unless you are a billionaire Silicon Valley AI/high tech exec. davisite.org/2026/08/22/f...

Jones is “ashamed” of supporting Prop 50 and endorses “sunsetting” of federal programs

By Roberta Millstein

Eric Jones, former partner of the venture capital firm Dragoneer Investment Group, seems to be shifting dramatically rightward in the wake of (or in order to gain?) the endorsement of Republican Ray Riehle, his former opponent in Jones’s attempt to become the congressional representative for California’s District 4. What’s going on here? There are several aspects, so let me unpack.

First Eric Jones’ donors paid to get 3 more R candidates on the ballot in CA-04 to siphon votes away from the top R. Then they spent >$100K in a smear campaign against him when it looked like he was going to beat Jones for 2nd place. Now that R, Ray Riehle, has endorsed Jones! Something smells here…

🐺. Here's the longer version of my letter to the editor that appeared in the Davis Enterprise—I had 250 words vs. 200 for the SF Chronicle, woo-hoo! 😁 I like this slightly longer version a bit better. Wolves & other species as members of our community, here: www.bibliopen.org/9780226834474
Facts and values. Both are important, but sometimes one masquerades as the other.

The UCD press release, "California wolves feed heavily on cattle," appears to be purely fact-based, describing a study indicating two northeastern California wolf packs have been eating primarily cattle.

But values are there, too — they're just hiding. They become apparent when you explore unstated assumptions along with questions asked and not asked.

The study's published article states, "Systematic extirpation resulted in [wolves] near-complete elimination from the contiguous United States by the mid-1900s."

Translation: There was a deliberate, federally-funded campaign to eliminate wolves in the U.S. in the early 1900s. That attitude — seeing wolves as interlopers to be destroyed — forms the backdrop for today's attitudes about wolves.

When a study focuses on the percentage of a wolf's diet that includes cattle, when it discusses "stressed cattle" who are raised only to be eaten, it's no surprise to learn that funding came from a Rangeland and Cattle Research Endowment and California Cattle Council.

This is about rancher money.

Also in the background: The cattle roam over public land. Is that land being put to its best use? Can we lessen our reliance on cattle for food and keep looking for better strategies to live with wolves?

We treat wolves as intruders rather than members of our community when we focus only on their actions and not our own.

I have no quarrel with the facts of the study, but its values deserve a second look.

Here I spread the word about facts and values in discussions of CA wolves — my letter to the editor responding to a recent study done by some UC Davis researchers, published in today's San Francisco Chronicle. Alas, they didn't print my plug for _The Land Is Our Community_, but what can you do? 😁
Cohabitate with wolves

Regarding “Study reveals what California wolves are eating. And it’s not good” (California, SFChronicle.com, July 8): Facts and values are important, but sometimes one masquerades as the other.

The study described appears to be purely fact-based, indicating that two California wolf packs primarily eat cattle.

But values are there, too, hiding until unstated assumptions are uncovered, along with questions not asked.

The study states, “Systematic extirpation resulted in (wolves) near-complete elimination from the contiguous United States by the mid-1900s.”

Translation: There was a deliberate, federally funded campaign to eliminate wolves in the U.S. in the early 1900s. That attitude — seeing wolves as interlopers to be destroyed — forms the backdrop for today's attitudes about wolves.

It is not surprising to learn that the study was funded by rangeland and cattle money.

Are the public lands that host cattle being put to their best use? Can we reduce our reliance on cattle for food and find better strategies for living with wolves?

We treat wolves as intruders rather than members of our community when we focus only on their actions and not our own.

I have no quarrel with the facts of the study, but its values deserve a second look.

I’m surprised that Porter did not mention this letter signed by 30 of her former staffers when she was asked about the viral videos. I think it’s the best response there is: nobody knows her better than the people who actually worked for her. This speaks of her strong & positive leadership
April 20, 2026
To Whom It May Concern,
We are former staff members of Congresswoman Katie Porter. We served in her congressional
office and on her campaigns, and we know what it is like to work with her up close, day after
day. We believe the public should understand the full person we know, not a caricature built
from a few clips on a bad day.
Here is what does not make the news: Katie shows up for her team. When we were dealing
with illness, grief, or family emergencies, she supported us in ways that were real and
personal. She demanded a lot, but she also fought for us, mentored us, and stood by us when
life got hard. She showed up not just in the hardest moments but also in the best ones, at our
weddings, celebrating the births of our children, and offering guidance as we navigated the
next steps in our lives and careers. Whether it was a successful committee hearing, a
fundraising quarter, or an in-district town hall, Katie recognized these wins as a team effort.
The traits that make Katie effective don’t always look soft around the edges. People are drawn
to Katie's leadership because she is a workhorse. She asked of us what she expected of herself.
We have worked for other members of Congress, senior military leaders, executive branch
officials, and in demanding private-sector roles. Without hesitation, Katie’s standards were
among the highest. But that’s one reason we chose to work for her. We know that Katie got
into politics and policy for many of the same reasons we did: to reform broken systems, serve
people, and accomplish big things. A few video clips of our worst moments are not the full or
honest measure of Katie or anyone’s career. That’s the truth.
Sincerely,

There are a lot of lyrics from Man-Sized Wreath that would work, I think.
Man‐Sized Wreath
Song by R.E.M. ‧ 2008

Overview
Lyrics
Turning on the TV and what do I see?
A pageantry of empty gestures all lined up for me, wow
I'd have thought by now we would be ready to proceed
But a tearful hymn to tug the heart and a man-sized wreath, ow
Throw it on the fire, throw it in the air
Kick it out on the dance-floor like you just don't care, oh
Give me some
Wave the palms, steal the alms, fists in the air
A motorcade up benign shows the people that you care, ow
Nature abhors a vacuum but what's between your ears?
Your judgement clouded with fearful thoughts, a headlights and a deer, ow
Throw it on the fire, throw it in the air
Kick it out on the dance floor like you just don't care
Look at what I've found, everybody look around
Everybody looking like they just don't care, oh
Give me some
Well I'm not deceived by pomp and odious conceit
But a tearful hymn to tug the heart and a man-sized wreath, ow
Throw it on the fire, throw it in the air
Kick it out on the dance floor like you just don't care
Look at what I've found, everybody look around
Everybody looking like they just don't care
Throw it on the fire, throw it in the air
Kick it out on the dance floor like you just don't care, oh
Give me some
Give me some
Give me some

@uofcalifornia.bsky.social , why are you contracting with a company that offers the "advice" to stay away from legal, politically justified protests against an illegal war? Hmm? "Travel alerts are provided by Crisis24, the University of California's travel security partner."
Further protests are likely to materialize in major cities across the US. Authorities will probably deploy security officers to monitor any demonstrations that materialize. Localized transport and business disruptions will likely affect areas subject to protest activity. Clashes between protesters and security forces may occur, particularly if authorities attempt to break up demonstrations deemed overly disruptive. Officers might use crowd control methods, including the use of tear gas.

Advice

Avoid all demonstrations as a standard precaution. Consider taking alternative routes to circumvent areas affected by protest activity. Account for likely disruptions affecting businesses near protest sites. Strictly heed all instructions from local authorities and law enforcement officers. Immediately depart the area at the first sign that any security disturbance may occur; in the event of nearby clashes, immediately seek shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building.

Speaker Mike Johnson has scheduled Rep.-elect Adelita Grijalva’s swearing-in for Wednesday around 4 p.m., right before the House votes on government funding, according to a notice from his office.

The Democrat was elected to her Arizona seat 49 days ago, but the speaker delayed her swearing-in as he kept the House out of session until after the Senate acted to end the government shutdown.

The Land Is Our Community would make a valuable companion volume to Leopold’s writings in environmental ethics or philosophy classes. Perhaps the book’s most notable synthesis of materials is the way in which Leopold’s ideas are put in dialogue with more contemporary ecological research. The other stand-out portion of the book is the discussion of what community-based conservation could look like in practice when a plurality of interest groups is included in the decision-making process. There is no pat formula for success here, as anyone involved in such messy and sometimes fraught community efforts will know, but Millstein deftly draws out the most salient ideas—what she calls the eight subprinciples of Leopold’s ‘Principle of Integration of Land Uses’—that could facilitate long-term partnership and community land care.

Dartmouth has rejected Trump's compact. Here is the response from Dartmouth Courage, www.dartmouthcourage.com, a coalition of Dartmouth alumni.
We applaud President Beilock and the Dartmouth Board of Trustees for their decision to reject the Trump Administration’s proposed “Compact for Academic Excellence in Higher Education.” In doing so, Dartmouth joins MIT, Brown, Penn, USC, and UVA in refusing to compromise institutional independence in exchange for preferential federal funding.
President Beilock made clear that “the involvement of the government through a compact—whether it is a Republican- or Democratic-led White House—is not the right way to focus America’s leading colleges and universities on their teaching and research mission.” This statement reflects a vital principle: No administration has the authority to demand political “compacts” that impose ideological compliance as a condition for federal research funding or academic legitimacy.
This is not merely the rejection of a single proposal—it is a clear repudiation of the tactic itself. This decision is a milestone in an ongoing struggle to defend American universities from political interference. Dartmouth now has both an opportunity and an obligation to stand visibly and vocally for the principles to which President Beilock has said she is committed.
While we commend Dartmouth’s rejection of the compact, we remain vigilant about what comes next. President Beilock stated she is “open to other ways to work with the federal government to enhance higher education.” But many of the compact’s proposals would weaken higher education, not improve it—and we are skeptical that this White House genuinely seeks to strengthen universities rather than control them.
As Dartmouth Courage, we will continue to advocate for freedom of thought and expression, institutional autonomy, and the promotion of diversity in all its forms. The next Alumni Council meeting is November 13-15, and Dartmouth Courage will call upon our alumni representatives to stand with the more than 1300 alums and 569 faculty members who have spoken out to ensure that the Board of Trustees and…

I'm very much looking forward to my visit to ASU next week! Note that there is a livestreaming option if any non-Arizonans else want to join in—see the RSVP info. I'll be drawing on ideas/themes from my book but from a different lens: stewardship (which is not something I talk about in the book).

Join us for Humanities Week!
The Lincoln Center and ASU Farm welcome
author and professor Roberta L. Millstein, who will
discuss her book, “The Land Is Our Community.”
Inspired by Aldo Leopold's land ethic, Roberta L.
Millstein reexamines this philosophy in light of
contemporary ecology.
Her book provides new interpretations
of interdependence, land health, and the
“biotic community,” offering a fresh take
on how these ideas can guide modern
conservation and restoration policy.

If you’re an alum of one of the nine schools targeted by Trump’s “compact” and you don’t want this to happen to your alma mater, then please sign this petition: alumni.controlshift.app/petitions/tr... #AcademicSky #EduSky And please share this post!
Doonesbury comic showing a university where the only students of color are those that play basketball and football, except “at least one token scholar of color“. The last panel shows a voice from the White House saying “Token! Such a beautiful, old-fashioned word! I love the token, from the standpoint of race!”

The DOJ's Harmeet Dhillon doesn't seem to have much of a problem with Hitler either.
4. As an undergraduate at Dartmouth College, you wrote articles and served as the editor-in- chief for a campus newspaper, The Dartmouth Review. During your tenure as editor-in-chief, you published an article comparing Dartmouth’s Jewish university president to Adolf Hitler, and an accompanying cartoon, which pictured the president dressed as a Nazi.

The Anti-Defamation League condemned the article and cartoon, stating that they “serve[d] to trivialize the Holocaust and the memory of those people brutally murdered by the Nazis.” However, at the time, you denied that the article was antisemitic and defended its publication.

a. Do you regret publishing this article?

RESPONSE: As I stated at my hearing, I understand the importance of standing up to defend the right to free speech, whether or not you agree with its subject matter.

b. Do you believe it was appropriate to compare university administrators and their policies to Adolf Hitler and the Nazis?

RESPONSE: Please see my response to Question 4(a) above.

🌱🐋 🌎 📗 #philsci I'm feeling humbled & grateful beyond words to read such a thoughtful & complimentary review of my book, _The Land Is Our Community: Aldo Leopold's Environmental Ethic for the New Millennium_ from someone whose work I deeply respect, Dr. Soazig Le Bihan. It's a dream review for me:
To conclude, Millstein presents a compelling case that Leopold’s land ethic, properly interpreted, offers “the environmental ethic of our time” (26). She demonstrates that her novel reading of the land ethic is exegetically accurate, consistent with current science, and pertinent to debates in the philosophy of ecology, environmental ethics, and conservation policy. Additionally, the book is highly accessible, engaging, and relatively concise. Overall, The Land is Our Community is an absolute tour de force.

The Council of University of California Faculty Associations (CUCFA) and a coalition of UC unions condemn the Trump administration’s attacks on the UC system and urge the UC administration not to capitulate to Trump’s demands. Defend higher education for the nation & CA! cucfa.org/2025/08/coal...
The coalition of UC unions condemns Trump’s attacks on the University of California and the California economy

On Friday August 8, the Trump administration demanded a $1 billion “settlement” from UCLA after freezing $584 million in federal grants for vital scientific and health research. The proposed $1 billion agreement would be the largest settlement since Trump began extorting universities, and marks the first attempt of the federal government to ransom payment from a public university. These attacks have been waged under the guise of fighting antisemitism and investigating alleged Title VII violations, but we see them for what they are: an attempt to cripple public higher education in the nation’s premier public university system.

The coalition of UC unions urges the University of California not to capitulate to the Trump administration

I am please to read this thoughtful and interesting review of my book, _The Land Is Our Community: Aldo Leopold's Environmental Ethic for the New Millennium_ in _The Quarterly Review of Biology_. Here's an excerpt. www.journals.uchicago.edu/doi/abs/10.1... 🐋🌱 📗 🌎 #EnvHum
Where the author shines is in the pulling together
of Leopold’s philosophy and offering it up for our
consideration in light of modern ecology. Here,
Millstein gives us two pearls that we can take home:
Leopoldian land health and what she calls “the argu-
ment from consistency” (p. 122). By land health, the
author argues that Leopold saw the overall vigor of
the ecological communities reflected in their ability
to self-renew—what we now call resilience.
The argument from consistency is a bit more com-
plex and rests upon the idea that we, humans, acknowl-
edge a responsibility to one another because we are all
part of the same society. But this is no less true when we
consider our place in the natural world—we have obli-
gations to the other members of our environmental
community as well. Enter the land ethic.
