Boring on about my cats and junior parkrun. On the longest career break. Have I mentioned my cat went missing for 10 years and then came back?

Well today properly felt like autumn so I made a lentil cottage pie with a ton of cheese on top and that's how we start the season.

The junior parkrun I volunteer at celebrated its third birthday today. I got to keep the balloon. The last 3 years have been so much fun and I'm so glad to be part of this every week.

This is weird because I was having a rant in my head about this earlier after a "I just want a normal coffee" speech I saw online. It's 2026, that particular "funny bit" has been circulating for decades now. You know what a cappuccino is now.

Niche complaint, but all the new junior parkrun gear is so much better than the adults range. Their new milestone socks just launched and they are excellent and only go up to a size 5. Boooo. Even for the kids that's a bit stingy given you can junior parkrun up until you turn 15.

Conversations with my son: "so the teacher suggested we make a poster featuring an animal, an action and a place. So I did a shark playing the trumpet in Antarctica".

Yes we skipped most of those, although I did get the artist in a globe picture as it was quiet at that point.

The MC Escher exhibition at Somerset House is very good but very crowded for a ticketed event. Also the worst gift shop I've ever seen. Incredible artwork though, I liked the early stuff which is very simple but creates such complexity.

We did the Garden Museum today. It's currently got a really nice exhibition about Benton End. Set up a bit like you're walking through the house and lots of striking artwork. The kitchen sink did test my son's understanding of "don't touch that". "But it looks so touchable..." It really did.
A full size realistic kitchen sink. Covered in blue & white patterned tiles and filled with fake dirty plates. It's a representation of the kitchen sink in Benton End.

One week left of the summer holidays and only one thing left to tick off the "list of things to do in the holidays". How's that for parenting folks? Also I may really have run out of London museums now.

I didn't expect them to work as well as they have and I'm delighted. Knowing what a pain it is being very short sighted I just wanted to save as much vision as we could.

I cannot function without my glasses. My kid can go swimming and see fine. They can get out of bed in the morning and not immediately reach for the specs. All because of some magic glasses with weird circles that somehow stop myopia getting worse.

I am short sighted. I started wearing glasses as a child and every eye test my eyesight got worse until I was in my 20s. My eldest child is also short sighted. They have myopia control lenses and a completely stable prescription since starting with them. Science is so cool.

A spark from railway work started a fire that burned through a bunch of gardens in my corner of SE London. So I'm all for that emergency alert. It is dangerous out there at the moment.

Well @preachypreach.bsky.social made me a cat food box with a hole in it, then a friend got me glasses and all turned out awesome. The eclipse was cool. There was a large and friendly crowd in the local park. Kids were enthused.

A friend got some glasses for me and I was won over by the eclipse. We had a great view from the local park and enjoyed trying out glasses, the pinhole box and a colander.

Oh that's a cool place to view it from. I did have a look for the special glasses at the weekend when I finally realised this was happening. I already couldn't find fast enough delivery. People queued for hours in Greenwich yesterday, I do not have the patience.

I'm failing to get excited about the eclipse and I've concluded it's because it involves too much planning. I don't have the spare brain space to be thinking about how to view it and where to view it. Someone just hand me a cereal box with a hole in please.

Swearing levels were fun for our second generation as my mum is American and doesn't see crap as a swear word. Which didn't quite gel with my sibling's parenting style. He winced a lot every time she said it in front of the small grandkids.

I'd be surprised by arse if reading to an 8 year old. I'd probably be expecting something more kid book sweary that nobody says in real life. Dunderhead or something. I'd rather arse than something like bitch. If it's not aimed at a person arse is less rude, like an "oh arse" comment.

Have got to the final season of Buffy with the teenager. I warned them without details that there was lots of annoying stuff in this season. Mostly Kennedy. Kennedy has just turned up and instantly I got "who is that? Oh god, is that Kennedy?". Instant hatred.

I've done it and mostly spent the week sitting around reading a book, if that's any comfort. Did one very mundane case, no violence involved.

I believe it does, although it seems quite excited about being buttery rather than subtle.

I am watching Before Sunrise and am reminded again how annoying it is that I am not, in fact, Julie Delpy looking stunning in a strappy dress over a t-shirt. Style. Icon.

The bees also like my hollyhocks. Which I also planted in a less than ideal spot. I didn't really think about how big they are when I put them at the front of the border.

Buzzy bee on my flower. It's a purple flower. It's possibly too tall to be in this planter but let's not dwell on that.

I'm reasonably certain the last lot put a CCTV camera in locally to us. It now has a pile of fly tipped waste underneath it.

Ceona @ceona.bsky.social · 05/07/2026
Currently enjoyed watching the few Labour councillors in our area post things like "we are asking the council to do more about fly tipping and put CCTV up." Do they think we have forgotten they had years to do it themselves?

Buried the old cat's ashes underneath the lavender bush where she liked to sleep. Current cat immediately went to investigate, dancing on her grave or a last goodbye?
