✨ We were pleased to welcome the Hon. Mike Harris, Ontario’s Minister of Natural Resources and MPP for Kitchener-Conestoga, during his recent visit to @uofguelph.bsky.social. 🎣 As an avid angler, he knows that healthy fisheries depend on healthy ecosystems. That’s where the CEM comes in!
From left to right: Interim Dean of the College of Biological Sciences Dr. Graeme Holloway, the CEM's own Dr. Carling Bieg and Dr. Kevin McCann, Hon. Mike Harris, and University of Guelph President Dr. Van Acker stand in front of a display of research (fishery) equipment facing the camera.

❓ Why does #biodiversity matter? One solid reason is the "portfolio effect": #ecosystems with a greater diversity of species and interactions tend to be more resilient to environmental change. Read more about this newly-published synthesis paper 👉 tinyurl.com/mryua4yn @esajournals.bsky.social

🎉 We're excited to introduce the CEM's newest addition, Dr. Carling Bieg! As a theoretical ecologist, her work looks at the dynamics of populations and food webs, global environmental change, and what makes ecosystems resilient. Her insights will be a welcome addition to our research community!

📈 This is what progress looks like! This working group, hosted by the CEM & funded by CIEE, brought together several bright minds from McGill, Yale, the Norwegian University of Science & Technology, and @uofguelph.bsky.social to focus on linking organismal thermal tolerance to population processes.

🎶 Tuning into #nature reminds us that it's anything but boring! (To be fair, it says "relaxing bird sounds", not "relaxed bird sounds".)
An illustration by Tommy Siegel of a man listening to supposed relaxing bird sounds on headphones, but in reality these sounds represent a crow tormenting a smaller bird after having eaten its young: "My babies! Somebody ate my babies!" // "I ate them and I'll eat them again next year!"
