Make a plan to check on those at high risk during heat waves.

Have a first aid kit for treating heat-related illnesses, such as cool packs and rehydration solutions.

Insulate your home and install reflective window films or shade to block out the sun’s heat.

Plant a tree. Neighborhoods with trees feel 10 degrees cooler.

• Proporcione mucha agua fresca y limpia.

Fireworks aren’t the only thing that can make your furry friend unhappy. Keep your pet healthy by taking extra care of them during hot days. You can follow this easy rule: if you wouldn’t be happy, your pet wouldn’t like it either! Learn more: bit.ly/LA-Heat-Resources #HeatSafeLA
Keep your pets safe in the heat.

• Keep pets inside or in a shaded area if outside.
• Provide plenty of fresh, clean water.
• Walk during cool hours and keep it short. Your dog's body can heat up quickly.
• Place hand on ground for 5-7 seconds before walking your pet - if you cannot keep your hand there, it's too hot for your pet's paws.
• Brushing your pet's fur can allow cool air to better circulate through their coat.
#HeatSafeLA
Know the signs of overheating in pets:
• Excessive panting, difficulty breathing, increased heart and respiratory rate, drooling, mild weakness or even collapse.
• If your pet is overweight, is older, or has a health condition they may have more trouble staying cool when it's hot.

If you think your pet is overheating:
• Get them to a cooler place quickly
• Wet their fur and skin and fan them to cool them down
• Take them to a vet

The sun’s rays can be stronger than they feel. Protect your skin with sunscreen (SPF 15+) , sunglasses, hats, and shade when outside. Sun safety helps prevent heat illness and long-term damage. Learn more at bit.ly/LA-Heat-Resources #HeatSafeLA
Sun Safety 101. LA’s sunlight is no joke! High heat = high UV risk. Protecting your skin prevents skin cancer, burns, and long-term damage. #HeatSafeLA

Sunscreen Dos and Don’ts. Make it a daily habit to protect your skin from UV rays. On hot days, avoid direct sunlight when possible.
Use SPF 15+ every day – all skin tones need it.
Don’t forget your ears, neck, hands - even the back of your knees!
No sunscreen is entirely sweat or waterproof. Make sure to reapply every 2 hours, or more if you are exercising
Use the teaspoon rule: Apply about a 1.5 teaspoon amount of sunscreen on your face

Gear up to cool down. Sunscreen should be your last layer of protection, not your only one.
Wide-brimmed hats
UV-protective clothing or long sleeves
Sunglasses with UV protection
Umbrellas or parasols

Climate change is making LA hotter. If you don’t have air conditioning in your home, consider these tips to stay safe in the heat. For more information & resources, visit bit.ly/CoolDownYourHome #HeatSafeLA
Cool Down Your Home.
Save energy and money while protecting yourself from heat-related illness.Prep your home for hot days:
Block out the sunlight using blackout curtains, shutters, blinds. Become a plant parent: indoor plants can regulate a room's climate and make you feel more comfortable. Place fans in the kitchen while you're cooking. Use kitchen and bathroom exhaust fans to dissipate heat and humidity. Set ceiling fans to run counterclockwise.Conserve energy:
Unplug unused appliances. Charge devices overnight. Close off unused rooms. Use energy saving light bulbs that don’t give off waste heat. Check insulation and seal any gaps in windows or doors.

Have A/C? Stay “Just Cool Enough”.
Set the thermostat to 78 degrees when home and 85 degrees when away. Make your own A/C: Place a pan of ice between you and a box fan to cool the air down.
