The two golden rules of screenwriting: 1. Never feed your first draft after midnight. 2. Don’t get water on the final draft or it’ll multiply into four new rewrite ideas you don’t have time for.  Embrace the ugly gremlin phase. It’s the only way to get to Gizmo! Tame your drafts at celtx.com!
Top: snarling, toothy gremlin labeled "The First Draft." Bottom: small, Gizmo labeled "The Final Draft."

Film noir didn't die in the 1950s - it just swapped fedoras for neon lights and cape-and-cowl detectives. 🕵️‍♂️ From Spider-Noir to The Batman, here are 5 modern neo-noirs proving the genre is alive and well.

The secret to a legendary parody? A real story and actual heart.  Shaun of the Dead and Airplane! aren't just collections of random jokes—the characters treat the ridiculous stakes with absolute gravity. If your characters don't care, your audience won't either.

To write a legendary cold open, you don't need explosions. You just need agonizing tension. The opening scene in Inglourious Basterds is pure psychological horror disguised as a polite chat. By the time the farmer finally breaks, the audience is holding their breath right along with him.

The baptism scene in The Godfather is the ultimate masterclass in cross-cutting. 🕊️💥 By intercutting holy church vows with mob assassinations, the script builds thematic irony and breakneck speed without wasting a single line of dialogue.

We’re sorry in advance for making you cry today (we cried while making this). 😭💔 Cinema's biggest tearjerkers rely on what's left unsaid. It's the silent opening of Up or Emma Thompson weeping alone in Love Actually. The power is always in the quiet subtext.

Stop introducing characters by having them look into a mirror and describe themselves.  A great intro uses action to show their flaws, their vibe, and their stakes. You could make it extreme like Frank-N-Furter or grit-focused like Erin Brockovich... just don't make it boring. 😉

Adapting a book is all about changing the lens.  In the Gone Girl novel, Amy is an over-the-top force of pure fury. In the film, she becomes a quiet, calculated thriller villain. When you lose the internal voice of prose, the character fundamentally changes.

You might think you've just written the greatest scene ever to grace the page, but if the text is dense, you may just be slowing down the pacing. If the page has white space, the brain speeds up to follow the action. When the character moves fast, your script should read fast.
