The Yanks aren’t aware enough to notice that for the most part, the rest of “America” (that is, denizens of the 𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙩 of America, N, & S) don’t tend to refer to their country as “America.” To Canadians, it’s “the US” and its inhabitants are “Yanks.” (Yup, we ignore the mason dixon line - boo hoo.)

Good reminder; thanks. We had a firesmart inspection of our house/property a few years back. We got a good rating, and learned a lot about what/what not to do. However our houses are not islands; if neighbouring properties are fire traps, our own preparedness might not count for much.

What I’m liking is that when I watched that clip in times past, it made me despair, but in light of everything happening now I have hope that we can crawl our way back out of the abyss.

It would never be an annexation. Poland wasn’t “annexed“ by Germany in 1939. An annexation would require some modicum of willingness on the part of the annexees. And it’s unlikely in the extreme that Canadians would come around to that.

In case anyone was wondering, suffragette Cicely Hamilton, born June 15, 1852, is currently 154 years old. Thank god for AI, or I would've missed this amazing fact.

Beautifully put, Emily. We're also learning to live with "our" garden; such a lovely perspective; thanks! Best of luck on your digital reconstruction journey. Disengaging from the broligarch machine is difficult, but hopefully possible at least some extent.

Sure, let's do that. But how about 100% Canadian designed/manufactured EVs? At present the only thing that even comes close are a few companies that make specialty vehicles like buses.

It's not a bent note, it's slid into. The passage starts at 2:22 in the below recording. I don't think it's deliberate. And it doesn't (to my ears) set up any particular tension, it's just out of tune. Sadly, such would never be allowed to stand in a modern recording. open.spotify.com/s/mOuxtVp

My favourite part of that song is the blatantly out of tune note in the guitar. It happens just before the 2 & 1/2 minute mark. No, I'm not kidding; lack of "perfection" is often what makes music great.

"This information!" Uh huh. Riiiiiight. Hacks like the NPost, Polievil et al constantly spout crap like that ("Trudeau is controlled by the Chinese!") but of course never have anything to back it up.

This sums up why I tend to avoid podcasts (most, not all). A podcast about (say) climate change. But...FIRST! Let's talk about my a-m-a-z-i-n-g craft beer! Then, the traffic on the drive over here! Then, spend another ten minutes on how GREAT it is to be back on the show again! Etc, etc. 🥱

ANY clip of him being interviewed by a woman. He interrupts, dismisses, cuts them off, every time. The guy's misogynist to his core. The (badly) photoshopped images, like the cleft chin one 🤣 and crowds inserted where clearly there were none. Runner up: the fake muscles vest.

Ha ha 🤣 - I read "Kip Winger" at first glance (which wasn't 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘱𝘭𝘦𝘵𝘦𝘭𝘺 far fetched, given his switch from 80s hair metal to classical some years back).

It can't even come close with classical music like say, unaccompanied cello. Not that it would be 𝙞𝙢𝙥𝙤𝙨𝙨𝙞𝙗𝙡𝙚, but nigh on, at least for now. So I think the trick is to avoid music that AI has any hope of convincingly emulating.

In the old Spider-Man comics, Aunt May used the term "pshaw" constantly. It's definitely a word that works better in print than spoken/audio. Had a hard time with this one, but once the possibilities were sufficiently narrowed it became clear: Wordle 1,852 6/6 🟨🟨🟨⬛⬛ 🟩🟨🟨⬛⬛ ⬛⬛⬛⬛⬛ ⬛⬛⬛⬛🟨 🟩🟨⬛🟨⬛ 🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩

Really good to hear. It's also true for me that circa 2008 I wasn't nearly as aware of music by historical women composers as I am now.

Not all that up on Ross, however I've been rankled. In "The Rest Is Noise" - not a single woman composer. & in an interview he said (words to the effect) that music by historical women composers is inferior (because of lack of opportunity) so we should only focus on present day music. Huge fails.

It's interesting that back in the day (70s) Mercury/Queen was quoted saying that they had aspirations to be one of the truly great, major bands of the world (words to that effect). At the time that seemed unlikely, but all these years later, they've indeed entered that pantheon.

What a cool reddit thread. So many songs that I'd never noticed are one chord! Of course one chord songs work. It's for the same reason pedal tones work so well; familiarity galvanizes emotion. I love the 1 chord tension in 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘝𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘦𝘺 by Leprous (the whole song isn't one chord, just a section).

It is a blow for sure. There are positives (not specific to this next mission, but in general). The 2026 astronaut class has more women than men for the 1st time ever. & it's inevitable that at least one woman will be on Artemis IV. They definitely dropped the ball with this latest selection though.

Several years ago I was in a recording session with an old school engineer who had a lot of experience recording multiple musicians simultaneously with two mics, as was done for decades. What he could achieve solely with mic placement seemed like magic. In today's world it'd be straight up sorcery.

I'm SO the same! If I listen to an hour long "pro" podcast about say, climate change, there'll be a good 15 minutes of banter about craft beer, that morning's traffic, irrelevant details of the guest's backstory... It's why I tend to avoid podcasts.
