The way to see the bird you want to see, is to stop looking for it, we all know this. You have to undo your gaze, let the bird happen without you. Be alert to the blue. Anne Enright on waiting for kingfishers in The Wren, The Wren

The time is coming, however, when people will be astonished that mankind needed so long a time to regard thoughtless injury to life as incompatible with ethics. Albert Schweitzer, Mansfield College Oxford, 1923

Kestrels are small falcons famous for their remarkable ability to hover perfectly still in mid-air while scanning the ground for prey. This behavior—often called "windhovering"—allows them to stay suspended facing into the wind to generate lift, keeping their eyes locked entirely on the ground below

"I willingly confess to so great a partiality for trees as tempts me to respect a man in exact proportion to his respect for them." -James Russell Lowell
A previously posted photo of a single bare tree next to the water in the wetlands. This area is a special place to me and this tree is my friend.

Ah, not to be cut off, not through the slightest partition shut out from the law of the stars. The inner – what is it? if not the intensified sky, hurled through with birds and deep with the winds of homecoming. Rilke

I'm no photographer but I like this picture of a brooding pigeon with her mate keeping a watchful eye close by.
V-section of a tree trunk with a hollowed out bit at the intersection. Dark head of a pigeon just about visible above the tip edge looking right while sitting high on the left branch is a male pigeon standing tall also looking right into the far distance.

The inward gates of a bird are always open. It does not know how to shut them. That is the secret of its song... Hugh MacDiarmid

Eastern Bluebird Softly beauty comes to us. It often gently whispers. We have to move past the noise In order to hear its calm reassurance...

In 2023 at least 960 #birds died in one day due to window collisions at McCormick Place in #Chicago. After applying bird-friendly window treatments, there were just 18 deaths all last fall. Further proof these simple changes work, and work well! It's time communities start making this a requirement.

This talk of making peace with it. Of feeling it and then finding a way through. Of closure. It's all nonsense. Here is what no one told me about #grief: you inhabit it like a skin. Everywhere you go, you wear grief under your clothes. Everything you see, you see through it, like a film. M. Renkl

A few countries are taking brave, pioneering steps towards radically transforming the lives of animals by representing them in legislation. The EU should add its endorsement as a matter of urgency. #EndTheCageAge #animalwelfare #DelivertheProposal

I do not believe in, never have believed in, any “transcendental” spirit above Nature; but there is a spirit in Nature, a cosmogenic spirit, which commands my respect and love; and it is this, perhaps most deeply, which serves to “explain” life, give it “meaning. Oliver Sacks

I'm finding it so difficult to delete my X account. I've been on it since 2009 and it was the source of so much beauty and taught me so much. It's breaking my heart but I cannot support what it has become.
