‼️ We sent notices of violation to Amazon, Target, and Walmart for selling shampoos, body soaps, and other hygiene products containing the carcinogenic ingredient Cocamide DEA. ☣️ List of products: ceh.org/list-of-shampoos-body-lotio…
These 38 soaps and shampoos contain a toxic ingredient. Image: shampoo bottles in a bathtub. What is Cocamide DEA?

Cocamide DEA is made by reacting coconut oil with a chemical called ethanolamine, which transforms it into a foaming agent that is often added to shampoos and soaps as an unnecessary thickener.

Cocamide DEA has been found to cause cancer. It has no place in any personal care products we use on our hair or on our skin.

Cocamide DEA is included on the ingredient lists printed on these products, so we know it is intentionally included.Isn't Cocamide DEA a thing of the past?

We got Cocamide DEA off the market over a decade ago by taking legal action that brought over 120 companies to eliminate Cocamide DEA from their shampoos, soaps, and other hygiene products between 2013 and 2016.

Unfortunately, in 2023 we noticed the carcinogenic chemical creeping back into the market starting with dollar stores that traditionally serve lower-income populations.
What is CEH doing about it?

We sent notices of violation to Amazon, Target, and Walmart for selling shampoos, body soaps, and other hygiene products containing the carcinogenic ingredient Cocamide DEA.

We are optimistic that this lawsuit will prompt these retailers to stop selling products with Cocamide DEA to ensure shampoos, body soaps, and hygiene products are free of this carcinogenic ingredient.

A Candy Shop of Deception. New report uncovers 125% increase in nicotine pouch use by youth.

Image: a child in a candy store, juxtaposed with brightly colored nicotine pouches sold at a smoke shop.New Report.

The Center for Environmental Health’s new report, A Candy Shop of Deception: Big Tobacco’s Evolving Plan to Addict Generations of Users shows a sharp rise in youth use of nicotine pouches, increasing 125 percent in the past four years.

CEH’s in-person investigation of California smoke shops and gas stations showed that 45 percent of retailers were illegally selling nicotine pouches in candy or fruit flavors.Flavored Nicotine Pouches in Lethal Doses

CEH’s secret shoppers were able to purchase flavored nicotine pouches from in-person and online retailers, and our photos look eerily like a candy shop. We found hundreds of nicotine pouches in more than 50 flavors.

While most pouches we found were sold in strengths between two and 12 milligrams of nicotine per pouch, three stores were selling nicotine pouches with 50 mg of nicotine per pouch, in cherry cola, bubblegum, and strawberry cheesecake flavors.

This can be a lethal dose of nicotine according to the CDC.Take Action:
