This #MentalHealthAwarenessWeek, we’re thinking about all those directly or indirectly affected by mental health challenges. Our goal at CEDaR is to better understand eating disorders and how to treat them so that those affected can get the help they deserve in time 💜

Compared to previous work based on women who were not treatment-seeking or diagnosed using clinical interviews, our study focused solely on mothers with a clinician-assessed eating disorder diagnosis and who were, mostly, treatment seeking. 6/6

Novelty: While previous studies mainly focused on the effects of maternal anorexia nervosa or bulimia nervosa on child psychopathology in population-based cohorts, our study focused exclusively on mothers with a lifetime eating disorder diagnosis and the well-being of their children. 5/6

Findings: Children at familial high-risk exhibited more psychiatric disorders, emotional disorders, and overall more mental health difficulties and peer relationship problems. Puberty was a critical window of risk for children at familial high-risk for eating disorders. 4/6

Background: Children born to mothers with an eating disorder are at increased risk of psychiatric morbidity, especially emotional and behavioural disorders. However, less is known about broader psychopathology and specific effects of maternal diagnoses. 2/6

✨ Overall, the results suggest that changes in weight and depressive symptoms do not always align, and that treatment response among AN inpatients is highly heterogeneous - pointing towards the importance of monitoring both weight and depressive symptoms throughout treatment. 7/8

4️⃣ Early rapid weight gain in very underweight patients did not reliably indicate sustained progress. 5/8

Center for Eating and feeding Disorders Research (CEDaR) @cedar-research.bsky.social · 10/03/2026
3️⃣ Patients with trauma‑related comorbidity or more severe eating pathology were more likely to remain in the severe‑stable depressive symptom group. 4/8
100
Center for Eating and feeding Disorders Research (CEDaR) @cedar-research.bsky.social · 10/03/2026
2️⃣ We also identified two trajectories of depressive symptoms change during treatment: 1) moderate‑improving 2) severe‑stable 3/8
100
Center for Eating and feeding Disorders Research (CEDaR) @cedar-research.bsky.social · 10/03/2026
Key takeaways: 1️⃣ Individuals in inpatient care for AN showed three different trajectories regarding changes in their BMI: 1) higher baseline BMI with consistent gains 2) low baseline BMIs with steady gains 3) low baseline BMI with early rapid gain followed by slowing or decline 2/8

In summary: ✨AN & OED have increased in Denmark between 2000 & 2022, which the COVID-19 pandemic likely contributed to ✨EDs are multi-system conditions with high levels of psychiatric & somatic comorbidities ✨Recognition of EDs in males is needed to achieve healthcare equity across the sexes (8/9)
100
Center for Eating and feeding Disorders Research (CEDaR) @cedar-research.bsky.social · 06/01/2026
KEY finding 4️⃣ ▪️The impact of EDs at a healthcare level is further confirmed by their high level of comorbidity with many physical and mental health illnesses, which warrants a detailed investigation of timing of occurrence (7/9) 👇 Example: Associations between bulimia nervosa & ICD-10 diagnoses
100
Center for Eating and feeding Disorders Research (CEDaR) @cedar-research.bsky.social · 06/01/2026
KEY finding 3️⃣ ▪️ED incidence in males has steadily increased in Denmark since the early 2000s, particularly for those below age 20 ▪️ Despite this, the male-to-female ratio for ED incidence remains lower than the widely reported 1:10 ratio, indicating ongoing under-diagnosis in males (6/9)
100
Center for Eating and feeding Disorders Research (CEDaR) @cedar-research.bsky.social · 06/01/2026
KEY finding 2️⃣ ▪️ We identified an increase in new OED and AN diagnoses during the COVID-19 pandemic at the population level ▪️ These increases are specific to girls/young women below the age of 20 years (5/9)
100
Center for Eating and feeding Disorders Research (CEDaR) @cedar-research.bsky.social · 06/01/2026
KEY finding 1️⃣ ▪️ New diagnoses of EDs have increased in Denmark over the last 22 years (particularly AN and OED in young females) ▪️ This may reflect genuine increases but may also be influenced by shifts in diagnostic practices, clinical awareness, stigma, or healthcare access (4/9)
100
Center for Eating and feeding Disorders Research (CEDaR) @cedar-research.bsky.social · 06/01/2026
What did we do❓ (part 2) ▪️ We identified comorbidities via ICD-10 diagnoses from hospital contacts & prescription medication data from the Danish National Prescription Registry ▪️ We used logistic regression models to assess their associations with #eatingdisorders (3/9)
100
Center for Eating and feeding Disorders Research (CEDaR) @cedar-research.bsky.social · 06/01/2026
What did we do❓ (part 1) ▪️ We identified #eatingdisorder cases via ICD-10 diagnoses of anorexia nervosa (AN), bulimia nervosa (BN), and other eating disorders (OED) ▪️ We calculated age- and sex-specific incidence rates for each year & prevalence for the years 2000, 2010, and 2022 (2/9)

3️⃣The lack of significant associations between the included PRSs and cortical characteristics, in the presence of an association between mental health traits and cortical characteristics (specifically for anorexia), suggests that brain alterations might be state markers and not trait markers.

2️⃣ We found a significant association between body image distortion and reduced grey matter volume. The reduction in grey matter volume might follow symptom onset rather than be a cause/ risk factor of the illness.
100
Center for Eating and feeding Disorders Research (CEDaR) @cedar-research.bsky.social · 26/11/2025
