The Roman Catholic archbishop of Indianapolis has dispensed the Sunday mass obligation for those afraid of detention or intimidation by ICE. What a profoundly messed up world we live in! 🕯️
A letter on official letterhead

CHRIST THE CORNERSTONE
GENERAL DECREE
Dispensation from the Obligation to Participate in Mass
On Sundays and Holy Days of Obligation
Whereas recent days have seen an increase in immigration enforcement in the Archdiocese of Indianapolis, causing a significant rise in fear and anxiety amongst our immigrant communities, and
Whereas the Christian faithful have an obligation to participate in Mass on Sundays and Holy Days of Obligation (c. 1246§1, 1247), and the fear and anxiety caused by the recent immigration enforcement activity may deter some of the Christian faithful from fulfilling their obligation to attend Mass, which would be detrimental to their spiritual welfare, and
Whereas the Archdiocesan bishop is able to dispense the faithful from disciplinary laws, both universal and particular, when it contributes to their spiritual welfare (c. 87 §1).
I hereby dispense from the obligation to participate in Mass on Sundays and Holy Days of Obligation all those persons living within the Archdiocese of Indianapolis who reasonably fear being detained, separated from their families, or experience intimidation due to the increased immigration enforcement. This applies even to those with proper legal documentation.
This dispensation will last through September 30th, 2026, unless further extended by decree.
The Christian faithful who discern they must make use of this dispensation are encouraged to supplement spiritual practices on Sunday and Holy Days of Obligation with practices such as praying with the Sunday readings of the Lectionary, praying the rosary or other sacramentals, and/or watching a livestreamed Mass on television or the internet.
Pastors and all those who minister to the faithful within the Archdiocese of Indianapolis are encouraged to attend to the spiritual care of those who must make use of this dispensation to the best of their ability, especially regarding the Sacraments Penance and Anointing of the Sick, or the distribu…

This was the profile that called me to my current parish!
A parish profile with images of parish scenes on the left and this text on the right:

All Saints
EPISCOPAL CHURCH
NORTHFIELD, MINNESOTA
THE PEOPLE, THE PLACE, THE POSSIBILITIES
All Saints has been a foundational presence in the center of this vibrant college town for over 160 years. The 2014 renovation of our historic church has allowed us to open our doors wider to the larger community. Our hearts are open to all and we welcome new opportunities to grow in God's love.
What do we love about All Saints?
The genuine sense of welcome for all, whether you're here for a week, a year, or a season of life; the care for each other and feeling of family created by seeking God together.
The stability and richness of our Episcopal liturgy, conducted with care and joy, joined with excellence in music and participation to enable meaningful worship week after week.
Our lived commitment to outreach to our extended community, in Northfield and beyond, as well as our regionally recognized efforts to care for God's creation with our facilities and our practice.
What are our dreams for the future?
To explore new ways to share our Way of Love in Northfield, to reach those who can find shelter, grow, and be fed in the kind of community All Saints offers.
To welcome children and youth and prepare them for living Christian lives in a rapidly changing world.
To sustain an emphasis on learning and growing in faith, within our congregation and with our student neighbors at St Olaf and Carleton colleges.
To continue to welcome and empower new leaders within our parish and our community
To continue our growth toward greater financial stability, that we may have more to share with those in need.
We are seeking a priest steeped in the practices and values of the Episcopal Church, as expressed in The Book of Common Prayer, with history, tradition, and reason as a foundation for the church today and for the future.
We seek a priest with a centered prayer life grounded in the Gospel of Jesus Christ and a deep love of liturgy and music. We hope for a priest who loves to teach and preach, connecting the word of scripture to the concerns of God's people today, inspiring us to be disciples doing the work that God has given us to do.
We seek a priest with outstanding communication skills, listening, speaking with clarity and concision, showing engagement and interest verbally and nonverbally with people from all walks of life.
We seek a priest whose character demonstrates gentleness, kindness, and friendliness; a priest who acts with intelligence, positivity, confidence, and empathy, while operating with respect, an open mind, and an ability to meet people where they are on their journey.
We seek a priest who is committed to providing pastoral care for all, for those who request it and for those who need it.
We seek a priest who will be present with us in the wider community, serving alongside us and representing us in Northfield and with our college ministries.
Last but not least, All Saints seeks a priest with a creative imagination, an appreciation for the gift of joy and wonder in all God's works, and with a Spirit-led commitment to helping the parish plan for those who are yet to come while modeling a collaborative and visionary presence today.
If you are ready to sow seeds of faith for future generations, while connecting with the faithful parishioners of All Saints, and to reach out to our wider community for growth, then we are ready to welcome you home. We pray for you in your discernment.

Three of my favorite poems by Wendell Berry from the POETRY journal (January 2001, June 1967, and November 1971 respectively.) 🕯️

HOW TO BE A POET
(to remind myself

I
Make a place to sit down.
Sit down. Be quiet.
You must depend upon affection, reading, knowledge, skill-more of each than you have-inspiration, work, growing older, patience, for patience joins time to eternity. Any readers who like your poems, doubt their judgment.

II
Breathe with unconditional breath the unconditioned air.
Shun electric wire.
Communicate slowly. Live a three-dimensioned life; stay away from screens.
Stay away from anything that obscures the place it is in.
There are no unsacred places; there are only sacred places and desecrated places.

III
Accept what comes from silence.
Make the best you can of it.
Of the little words that come out of the silence, like prayers prayed back to the one who prays, make a poem that does not disturb the silence from which it came.THE BURIAL OF THE OLD
The old, whose bodies encrust their lives, die, and that is well.
They unhinder what has struggled in them.
The light, painfully loved, that narrowed nd darkened in their minds becomes again the sky.
The young, who have looked on dying, turn back to the world, grown strangely alert to each other's bodies.

A HOMECOMING
One faith is bondage. Two are free. In the trust of old love, cultivation shows a dark graceful wilderness at its heart. Wild in that wilderness, we roam the distances of our faith, safe beyond the bounds of what we know. O love, open. Show me
my country. Take me home.

Screenshot that reads: [God] did not say: You will not be assailed, you will not be belabored, you will not be disquieted, but he said:
You will not be overcome. God wants us to pay attention to his words and always to be strong in our certainty, in well-being and in woe, for he loves us and delights in us, and so he wishes us to love him and delight in him and trust greatly in him, and all will be well.

The process is to talk with your parish priest who would decide if it’s appropriate to go to the bishop for permission/further steps. See below for TEC’s teaching. In the meantime, remember that you are baptized and that your baptism is the greatest defense against anything spiritually malicious.
Concerning Exorcism
The practice of expelling evil spirits by means of prayer and ritual derives its authority from Christ Jesus, who understood power over these forces as a sign of Messianic identity. The Church in succeeding centuries recognized this power of Christ in their shared life but reserved the rites of exorcism to its bishops. Later still the bishops began to delegate this authority to select presbyters and others deemed competent.
In accordance with this established tradition, someone in need of such a ministry, and anyone desiring to exercise it, makes the matter known to a presbyter, who in turn consults with the bishop. The bishop then determines whether exorcism is needed, who is to officiate at the rite, and what prayers or other formularies are to be used.
The rituals of exorcism, while weighty and never to be undertaken lightly, are not by nature esoteric. The Celebration of the Eucharist, especially in a place that has been disturbed, and the prayer of the Great Litany, for example, are ordinary practices. As Christ has said and as scripture counsels, any rites of exorcism include preparatory prayer and fasting.

Super love for a random guy to remind me that my orders are invalid on my anniversary. The sheer and utter arrogance of people like this astounds me. 🕯️ (Also I want to acknowledge that women who are priests deal with this garbage all the time and I am extremely angry on their behalf.)
Screenshot of a Facebook post by Fr Ron Rolheiser, OMI which says “I try to celebrate Eucharist every day because l am a priest and part of the covenant a priest makes with the church at his ordination is to pray the priestly prayer of Jesus, the Eucharist and the Liturgy of the Hours, regularly for the world. But more personally, the older get, the less confident, in some ways, I am becoming. I don't always know whether I'm following Christ properly or even know exactly what it means to follow Christ, and so I stake my faith on an invitation that Jesus left us on the night before he died: To break bread and drink wine in his memory and to trust that this, if all else is uncertain, is what we should be doing while we wait for him to return.” I commented how it was my six ordination anniversary today and thanked him for the post. Some random guy commented, saying that my orders are invalid.

“In God’s economy, the spear that the soldier used to pierce Christ’s side should never be used for violence again.” - @revrachelmann.bsky.social Really excellent essay on war from the Revd Dr Rachel Mann in June’s edition of @christiancentury.bsky.social 🕯️
Like the early Christians, I want to say wat has no mythological meaning. Ultimately, it sip-nals humanity's failure to embrace what God reveals in the cross and resurrection: the emptiness of violence. The Easter event inaugurates? clear revelation of the shape and nature of God's kingdom. Rather than swearing revenge and renewing the cycle of hate and violence, the risen Christ comes forth offering reconciliation and forgiveness. In Gods economy, the spear that the soldier used to pierce Christ's side should never be used for violence again. War is what happens when we fail to lay it down.
