Early spring 2024 sees a chlorophyll surge in the Northern Adriatic Sea, plus marine heatwaves in the Mediterranean and Black Seas, leading to record temperatures. Storms from 2023 to 2024 cause salinity drops in the Northern Adriatic Sea. In November 2024, a storm drops the Bothnian Bay to a record-low sea level. The sea temperature off the coast of Catalonia was above 26°C, except along the northern coast where it was around 23–24°C, with a very significant gradient over a very short distance. These SST values are 3–3.5°C above normal levels for early October.

🌡 August #C3S Climate Bulletin reports that August was the joint-warmest month on record & 1.65°C above the estimated pre-industrial level. Western Europe saw its warmest summer on record, while the average sea surface temperature across the extra-polar ocean was also the joint highest on record. ⬇️

August 2026 broke the record for the mean monthly SST in the Mediterranean, with 28.2°C and a mean anomaly of 1.9, which also marks a new record since the @CMEMS_EU reprocessed data series start in 1982. Daily record was also set on 20 August, with a temperature of 28.7°C #MEDMOS medmos.eu
