fantasy musical instruments and musical mages. based on a vague dream where i was playing a "bassoon". when i woke up i could vaguely remember the construction of the mouthpiece. the instrument was designed around that and then the mages were designed around the instrument. may 2024

an illustration and diagram of a fantasy magical musical instrument. it is a woodwind instrument that somewhat resembles a dulcian, the precursor to the modern bassoon. the main body seems to be constructed of segments of hardwood and is sharply folded in on itself. the mouthpiece and bell of the instrument feature carved stone construction. the bell of the center example features a carved dragon head and the second example features a carved ram's head. the ram's head also features an inset gem in the forehead. a note reads "stone focuses spell casting of most magics". on the left of the image there is a fingering diagram numbered 1 through 10 from high to low pitch. there are two descriptions next to the diagram. one reads: "keywork might differ between instruments. the higher-pitched or simpler examples may have no keywork." and the other has an arrow pointing to a lower middle joint or bracket on the instrument and reads "neck strap may attach here or instrument may be held in a cloth sling". below the fingering diagram there is an inset photo of a notebook page which has rough pencil sketches of diagrams and notes taken of the instrument's mouthpiece construction upon waking up. text on the corner of the sketch page reads "dreamed i was playing a 'bassoon'."
