Rivendell progress: 66.51% done (99,762/150k stitches, 36/59 colors) there was no combination of completed colors I could find that would land me at exactly 66.66...666% 😔
A nearly 2/3 finished cross stitch project of Jerry Vandersteldt's Rivendell illustration. The latest color is a dark green on the trees and foreground cliff faces

of their many crimes, one is this construction that is clearly meant to apply "AI[hyphen]" to "localized" as well, while obfuscating the very fact (almost makes it sound like "localized dialogue" is the thing to be ashamed of!)
A sentence from the AI disclosure info from this game, on Steam.

It reads:
"The optional Free Ride mode includes AI-generated passenger missions and localized dialogue."

I have circled "AI-" in red and drawn an arrow reinserting it between "and" and "localized"

anyway if they want to take my insightful feedback and invent the Manga Flashback Finder and make it free, open source, local, and non-scrapey, by all means
another question, and my pre-jotted answer notes:

q: Are there any areas where you believe AI could provide value in the future? For example, quality assurance, consistency checks, terminology management, translation review support, or other aspects of the localization process. We would love to hear your thoughts on potential future applications.

a: /the only singular possible technology I can imagine that would help me is a program that can "look" at a flashback panel and tell me exactly where that spot occurred, in a past volume. That's a part of my job that inevitably takes a lot of labor. Find me a robot that can do that, and that's all I need. Absolutely nothing else though. No robot should be doing QA, consistency checks, terminology management. Those are all aspects of my job, that have to be done by a human.

some consulting firm found me on linkedin and paid me $$$ to rant on video for an hour about how shoving AI into the manga loc industry to sloppify the process is stupid and evil cons: -linkedin lunatics -had to talk to a robot pros: -got to tell them where to shove it -minor wealth redistribution
an interview question, provided in advance, and my notes on my answer, jotted down in advance of the interview
(my answer was not limited to what I wrote here; these were just jumping-off points):

q: What do you see as the primary challenges associated with the use of AI in manga translation? We would be interested in your perspective both from a technical standpoint, such as translation quality and accuracy, and from ethical or rights-related perspectives, such as copyright, creativity, and authorship.

a: /It can only harm the process and slow it down. Especially with manga, AI is horribly inaccurate (because of the aforementioned challenges with manga translation specifically) and doing a post-LLM edit of a manga script would take more time than doing it from scratch. There's no point. If someone isn't a qualified translator, then they're not qualified to judge the LLM's output, and if someone *is* a qualified translator, then they should just do the job from scratch.
/of course it's unethical from the ground up. the models were trained on stolen material. and an LLM can never be an "author". to that point, why should a consumer pay for such material? they could just run the machine translation themselves! a publisher and a translator have to offer the consumer something of actual value.
/it goes against the very notion of art and creativity, which is inherently human. everyone understands this except the businesspeople who think they can profit from AI. skilled creatives are not on board.
/in terms of copyright, it seems like a terrible idea to feed manga scripts/art to AI models, which are going to then scrape the material. and this is often confidential material that hasn't been released to the public yet, re: simulpubs. I think a manga author ought to be able to demand that publishers do not use AI on their work in any form, and they would demand that, if they were savvy and informed.

in which Sakamoto's detached/anthropological explanation of the eucharist (as a curious ritual by an exotic religion) likens Dracula to capitalists and posits that both are incompatible with Christianity (these start-of-volume essays destroy my pace, but they're always a hoot)
text reading as follows:

Nearly every sect of Christianity consumes a form of consecrated bread during certain rituals, such as the Catholic Mass. Also called the communion wafer or the host, the eucharist is believed to be the body of Jesus Christ himself. Though the exact method of preparation and name varies between sects, the bread is said to undergo transubstantiation and become the body of Christ when blessed by the clergy via a specific rite. Worshippers believe that by consuming the eucharist alongside wine (said to be the blood of Christ), they can achieve divine power and a deeper connection with the deity they worship. The origin of this practice is rooted in Christ’s words at the Last Supper, when he said, “Take, eat; this is my body. …Drink of it, all of you; for this is my blood of the covenant,” referring to bread and wine, respectively. In doing so, he expressed a desire to distribute his blood and body to all people, equally.

On the other hand, Dracula, the UnDead King, drinks the blood of others to enhance his own power, which, in a way, frames him as an entity completely antithetical to Christ and the Christian god. He claims the power of humans as his own (in the form of blood) and destroys his victims, starting with the meekest among us. This is also an uncannily apt description of capitalists, who were rising to power as capitalism spread like wildfire across most societies during Bram Stoker’s time. Stoker’s formless King of the Night symbolized a virus attacking the entire world, as well as those unseen looters and plunderers dominating society in the name of capitalism. That threat still looms large and grim before us today, as if to represent all that is wrong with the world. This monster is undying and immutable, yet Mina and her companions stand against it unflaggingly. Mina, in particular, is someone who seeks to right the ills and outrages of the world, and I see her as Bram Stoker’s symbol of hope for a brighter future.

the kind of bonkers choice (likely) hard-mandated by Japan that gives localizers hives how about a different, contextually apt American city name that hadn't been run through a woodchipper— ...Phoenix! ...Phoenixia/Phoenicia? Phoenixvania? Phoenixistan? www.bloomberg.com/news/newslet...
excerpt from a Jason Schreier bloomberg article about The Adventures of Elliot:

"But the game’s producer, Naofumi Matsushita, says it has a different origin story. “It was not because of Philadelphia,” he said in a recent interview, speaking through a translator.

Instead, the name came from the Japanese word for “Firebird,” said director Shota Fukebaru, to which they added “dia” as a suffix, arriving at “Firabierudia.” (A firebird plays a significant role in the game’s world.) The final translation from Square Enix eventually came out as Philabieldia.

“We thought about a way that would make it sound cool in Japanese,” said Fukebaru. “And so that’s how we landed on that name.”"

v3: the ghost of Van Helsing seems to use the word "ajito" when summoned by the Ouija board. v6: Mina notes Jo casually using "ajito" while otherwise speaking English. v7: Mina accuses Jo of faking the seance(s). He thought ajito was an English loanword in JPN, but it's from the Russian agitpunkt.
in DRCL: Midnight Children, volume 3:
a ouija board has illuminated letters spelling out "AJITO". Mina finds this odd/curious.Three volumes later, in an unrelated conversation, Jo Suwa uses the word "ajito" in the middle of an English sentence. Mina once again takes note of this.In a Japanese-style home, in a dream, a shadowy fusion of Mina and Jo Suwa's mother explains to him that his use of "ajito" in the seance revealed that he was faking the summoning and was in fact moving the planchette himself, because "ajito" is from Russian and is never used in English. Ergo, the ghost of Van Helsing the Dutchman would certainly not use it.
