My new favourite sentence in a scholarly publication: 'we have arrived at a rather complete state of chaos'. (Dobbie, Manuscripts of Caedmon's Hymn, 1937)

One of my favourite hobbies is purchasing palaeography tomes and having them shipped to my parents' house to see my Dad's (not a palaeographer) reaction.

Nope, second existential crisis of the day. 'On the other hand, as he matured, William [of Malmesbury] came to regret the amount of time he had spent in researching and writing history.'
The OMT edition states: 'On the other hand, as he matured, William [of Malmesbury] came to regret the amount of time he had spent in researching and writing history.'

Have you ever wanted to know how much of the CLA corpus is comprised of Insular manuscripts? I bet you did. It is a hwopping 19%. 19. Percent. Now you too can tell your friends and family this fun fact! You're welcome!

I beg your finest pardon?
The Internet Archive.org description of W.M. Lindsay's Palaeographia latina labels it as having 'explicit sexual content'.

Oh. Huh. Well, this is awkward.
In Eleanor Shipley Duckett's 1951 monograph, 'Alcuin: Friend of Charlemagne', she claims that '[i]t would be tedious to list all the names of Alcuin's correspondents, clerical, monastic and lay, in his native land.' And that is precisely what I am currently doing.

E.A. Lowe continues to crack me up: 'As far as my experience goes with pre-Caroline manuscripts, and I have seen most of them...' I mean, he probably wasn't wrong, but still.

*sigh* So close. So very, very close.
This footnote lists contributors to a project, and my name is switched so that my first name is displayed as my surname, and vice versa.

That 5.9 magnitude earthquake in Malmesbury was caused by Aldhelm rolling over in his grave
A scholarly resource states that Aldhelm studied in Ireland. Aldhelm's infamous Letters to Heahfrith and Witfrith describe Aldhelm's disdain for Ireland and contemporary Irish scholars. Aldhelm was trained by Máeldub, an Irishman who came to England.
