SciArt September, Day 24: Down. One of my favorite birds, herons, have powder down feathers. These grow continuously in strategic areas of the body (like the chest) and the tip breaks down into a fine, talcum-like powder that the birds use to clean their feathers, much like a dry shampoo. 🐡🎨

SciArt September, Day 22: Silk. I did not realize how many different insects create silk. These are green lacewing egg sacs suspended on a rigid silk strand that is excreted and hardens after it is stretched out. The structure is unique and being researched as a biomaterial. 🐡🎨 #silk #greenlacewing

SciArt September, Day 18: Almond. As I looked up almonds, I realized I had never heard of green almonds! These are almonds before they have had a chance to ripen. With a fuzzy outer skin, similar to a peach, the flesh inside is creamy, pale and almost jelly-like—and you eat the whole thing! 🐡🎨🌱

SciArt September, Day 7: Woad. Woad is a plant that produces a blue dye. Since the prompts this first week are focused on color, I broadened my subject and went with a blue/green algae, or Cyanobacteria. This often produces toxic blooms on bodies of water. 🐡🎨 #woad #cyanobacteria
