More work needs to be done on characterizing the S. epigloea AA14s and potential activity on GXM. Collaborators include @ddiazescandon.bsky.social @sarahddl.bsky.social @metalichen.bsky.social @ahuereca.bsky.social Shauna Zenteno @lordforbington.bsky.social @ualberta.bsky.social 5/5

We looked for orthogroups unique to S. epigloea, and found an AA14 lytic polysaccharide monooxygenase (LPMO) undetected in the other Sporothrix genomes. Digging in, this AA14 could not be found in Ophiostomatales and was most similar to those of the Hypocreales. 4/5

Reductions were found in every gene family examined, including those coding for plant and fungal cell wall degrading enzymes. 3/5

Sporothrix epigloea is a 🍄 that lives on another 🍄, Tremella fuciformis (white jelly fungus, 銀耳). We sequenced strains of S. epigloea and compared them to other Sporothrix genomes, including pathogens. Turns out S. epigloea has the smallest Sporothrix genome to date. 2/5 📷 Jacob Kalichman

GXM-based gels make Cryptococcus deadly to humans and jelly fungi wobbly. But how is GXM broken down? We set out to find an organism that makes a living in GXM, and found one. 1/5 Excited to share this paper out now in @genomebiolevol.bsky.social w/ @spribille.bsky.social 🔗 bit.ly/4aGwSqk

Massive gene loss in the fungus Sporothrix epigloea accompanied a shift to life in a glucuronoxylomannan-based gel matrix
Abstract. Fungi are well known for their ability to both produce and catabolize complex carbohydrates to acquire carbon, often in the most extreme of envir
