the partner found an extremely conveniently-located fruit and vegetable truck which will sell you an unbelievable amount of fresh produce for very little money. This was our last haul from the other day, which was $10. I just came back with another enormous $10 shipment. These folks are heroes.

the book Strange Stars, an exploration of the intersection between sci-fi and the psychedelic rock/pop phenomenon of the late sixties and beyond, is really erudite in the sense that the author is both well-read and well-listened. It mentions Jimi Hendrix several times. Jimi was an Afrofuturist imo.

here's Maisie the cat, an unbelievably good cat, who passed away at age ~18 a couple years back. She was my mom's cat, i took her in when my mom got sick. We always wish we did more for our cats (and humans). I guess i did the best i could. It hurt to lose her. Take care of yourself, no matter what.

brief pause. i cant find the garam masala i already toasted and ground so im toasting more. found a box with kitchen stuff but it didnt have everything im missing. Also missing(?) a big box of cds and all my cookbooks. But they might be here, so idk. Fortunately i saved the chana masala blend recipe

Chana (Chole, Chholay) Masala
YIELD: 1½ CUPS (356 ML)
This is the perfect spice blend for the spicy chickpea curry called chana masala. (l's a little confusing, but the dish and the spice blend go by the same name.) The key to this spice blend is the dried pomegranate seeds, which lend a needed sourness to the dish. Sheer perfection!

4 cup (24 g) cumin seeds
¼ cup (20 g) coriander seeds
¼ cup (28 g) dried pomegranate seeds (anardana)
2 teaspoons black mustard seeds
2 teaspoons fenugreek seeds
10 whole cloves
2 black cardamom pods
4 green cardamom pods
3 (3-inch [7.5-cm)) cinnamon sticks, broken into pieces
1 teaspoon carom seeds (ajwain)
1 tablespoon whole black peppercorns
5 medium cassia leaves (or bay leaves), broken into pieces
10 whole dried red chiles, broken into picces
1 tablespoon dried fenugreek leaves (ka-soori methi)
2 tablespoons mango powder (amchur)
1 tablespoon ground ginger
1 tablespoon black salt (kala namak)
1. In à shallow, heavy pan, dry roast the cumin, coriander, pomegranate seeds, mus-tard, fenugreek seeds, cloves, black and green cardamom pods, cinnamon, carom, peppercorns, cassia or bay leaves, red chiles, and fenugreek leaves over medium heat. Stay close, and shake the pan every 15 to 20 seconds to prevent the spices from burning. They should be just toasted and aromatic. After about 4 minutes of roasting, transfer the mixture to a plate and allow it to cool for 15 minutes.
2. Once the mixture is cool, transfer it to a spice grinder or the dry jug of a powerful blender, such as a Vitamix. Add the mango powder, ginger, and black salt and process to a fine powder. You may need to grind it in small batches, depending on the size of your grinder. Sift after grinding to get a finer powder. Store in an airtight container for up to 6 months.

some plants i have noticed down here lately (there have been a lot more growing in people's gardens but i dont want to make folks uncomfortable by taking pictures of their houses. I'll figure out the etiquette eventually)

plant with yellow flowers looking a lot like a hypericum/St John's wort.

bindweed (looks like a morning glory, solid white flowers, i think theyre cool) growing on a chainlink fence.

not sure what this exotic jungle flora is, but i think it gets chungus-sized and develops huge flappy leaves, ive seen it around here before, assuming it's the same plant im thinking of.

also i finally grabbed a semi decent picture of the beautiful mosque i pass by on the way to the food store.

a beautiful mosque on Walnut st in West Philly, with pitched roofs, domes(!!), green doors and trim, and a big window with fantastically beautiful scrollwork around it, rounded archways. This building captivated me at first sight. Good job, everyone, shoutout to Islam for inspiring awesome stuff like this. They also have a pollinator garden in front.

part of today's haul. Im in the Aedificium now, sipping tea and tweaking Daydream Nation on cassette through the sound system. I kind of wish i could boost the treble. There's continuous sound with fewer lone transients than other styles of music. The production has something to do with it, too.

Turkish black tea, a Quran (im not gonna get weird with it, dont worry), and halal lamb and rice loaded with both sauces and salad, plus complimentary(!) Arizona green tea (11 bucks(!) including tip).

oh okay, there are small scale family farms around here which have bison (the map is bs; Vernon doesnt do bison iirc) the "family farm" paradigm seems to predominate the local food systems around here, which seems to defuse a lot of the type of criticism associated with huge agriculture operations

Also one day i pulled up there, blasting King Tubby, and the guy nodded at me and gave me a big thumbs up. So i love and respect those folks even though i can't really afford their food), and uhh everything else is kind of far afield.

what looks like a spider plant growing in an old glass coffee carafe which is honestly genius-level decor. Its long roots extend into the water in the carafe. It's pretty cool.
