Considering I saw a bee disappearing into a hole in one of my balcony planters carrying a piece of leaf on two occasions, there are probably some optimistic bees around.

LLMs would make great conspiracy theorists though. I was trying to identify the the hashing function used to map an identifier to a directory path, and the model claimed that my system is compromised because the output didn't match the prediction. Nope, my guess about the input was wrong...

I'm more bemused by the lack of exterior blackout shutters. My grandma's house in Germany was nowhere near as warm as my apartment in Cambridge last week, even though it had hit 36°C there. It's as though I never left my top floor Philly row house apartment that didn't have window AC in the kitchen

New preprint! We generate 40 new high-quality microsporidian genomes from infected arthropod hosts that were sequenced to create reference genomes by the Darwin Tree of Life project. 8 of our genomes are chromosome-level, and we’re able to generate Hi-C data for 7! 🧬 www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

To retrieve the rest of the genomes, we went back to the reads. Neither sample contained much parasite sequence (dark colours indicate low coverage). Meta-assembly worked well in one case. In the second case, removing the majority of fish reads based on VAE embeddings made the assembler's job easier
A) VAE embeddings of read tetranucleotide content for the Trachurus trachurus sample, coloured by median 31-mer occurrence across the whole set. Darker colours indicate low k-mer coverage. A cluster of low-coverage myxozoan reads is visible on the right. B) K-mer histograms showing the entire dataset (blue, upper curve), and the selection corresponding to the parasite (green, lower curve)
