That was all the published detail I was aware of until today. And today there is a lot more, thanks to @michaelschulman.bsky.social
"Little Bear Ridge Road" was originally commissioned by Steppenwolf, which premièred it in Chicago in 2024, starring Metcalf. Rudin offered to bring it to New York as his first Broadway show after the self-imposed exile, but Steppenwolf declined to work with him.
"It didn't feel in alignment with our values and mission that he would come back on Steppenwolf's name," someone involved with the theatre company told me. "In a precarious moment where we were rebuilding back from the pandemic, why would we partner with someone who the industry felt really harmed by? We can't be a vehicle for someone to prove that they've changed." When Steppenwolf pressed him on how he'd reformed, the person I spoke to recalled, Rudin "never made us feel that he had done the work."At first, Metcalf was open to finding another producer to bring the play to Broadway, but none materialized.
Steppenwolf, still refusing to partner with Rudin, held firm. Metcalf was distraught; she wanted the play to have a future.
Caught between her longtime theatrical home and her most powerful champion, she took the extraordinary step of threatening to quit Steppenwolf unless it relinquished the rights. The theatre, facing the defection of one of its most prominent members, took this as an ultimatum. In the end, Steppenwolf agreed to release the rights, clearing the way for Rudin to make his return to Broadway. When "Little Bear" arrived in New York, last fall, Steppenwolf was acknowledged in a note in the Playbill, but the names above the title were Scott Rudin and Barry Diller. The play was critically admired but commercially disappointing, and it closed eight weeks early.I asked Metcalf about her standoff with Steppenwolf. "I can't really go into that, because that's something I haven't even figured out for myself, my relationship back there," she said, tearing up. She has not been involved in Steppenwolf's current season, its fiftieth. "I want my own celebration of that, and I want to celebrate it with some of the Old Guard," she went on, crying as she folded up the notebook paper. "I want to go back in time, and I want to be brave with the people who taught me to be brave. I don't want to worry if something is not P.C.—not to trigger people. Just to be daring:
Controversial, if it wants to be. Back then, we didn't have to be so scared that we were going to step on somebody's toes and get brought down. We won't call it the fiftieth.
We'll call it something else. It'll be like getting the band back together for one last tour, you know?"

I saw it and loved it! Steppenwolf would normally be a producer of any Broadway transfer if one of their productions, but when it was finally announced in the next year, the commercial producer mounting it is Scott Rudin in comeback mode, and Steppenwolf is out. www.nytimes.com/2025/07/07/t...
Reflecting some of the complexity of Rudin's return to Broadway, Steppenwolf has opted not to be involved with the Broadway transfer. "Steppenwolf is proud to have commissioned the world premiere of 'Little Bear Ridge Road' by Samuel D.
Hunter, however we have decided to not take a role in producing the Broadway production," the theater's leadership said in a statement. "We wish ensemble member Laurie Metcalf, director Joe Mantello and Sam all the best."

I will never forget the time he made a point of leaving a pair of high heels out in his hotel room for a magazine writer to notice, just to make this cringeworthy joke.
Home may be L.A., but Avenatti lives most of his nomadic existence on the road, preferably in five-star hotels. In June he met with TIME at the Park Hyatt on 57th Street in Manhattan. He had come to town to accompany Daniels to an interview with the local U.S. attorney's office, but the feds canceled at the last minute, leaving him fuming. His suite was strewn with legal papers as well as a pair of strappy black high heels. Asked who they belonged to, he joked,
"Ivanka-wouldn't that be a story?"

A film whose unique strengths transcend its occasional flaws. The length, which is monumental if you think of it as a feature, but modest if you think of it as a TV series, was ultimately necessary. All the mundane moments are so essential to understanding the climax on an emotional level.
I wish I somehow took actionable lessons on the current moment in American politics from this project. But that's not really how it works. I do understand more about what it means to be alive imon earth right now, and that is the highest calling of storytelling.
Stray observations:
-An all-time great movie dog. I hope he's doing well!
-Russians born in the 90s are apparently obsessed with Harry Potter.
-I love the constant food-sharing.
-I would love to get 2 free movie tickets with a bottle of Hennessy

The movie we saw in theaters was the Lord and Miller cut. They refer to the longer one as "embarrassing." From this quote, and Drew Goddard's ScriptNotes interview, sounds like the cuts were artistic decisions. Hopefully some can be released can be released as "deleted scenes" (remember those?)
"Our first official test screening went great, but we do a lot of earlier screenings for friends and family and other filmmakers and writers," Miller explained. "This movie was massive.
When we finally got the assembly cut down to under four hours long, we
subjected some filmmaker friends of ours to a three hour and 45 minute cut of the movie, which was embarrassing."

I watched two John Sayles movies this week, Matewan and Lone Star, and they are both masterpieces. The latter, in particular, speaks very directly to our current moment. I need to watch all the rest now.
Still from Lone Star. A anglo man and hispanic hispanic woman sit in a closed, dimly Mexican restaurant at night, looking out at an empty town square. Still from Lone Star. A young Black man in glasses is engrossed by an amateurish gallery exhibit featuring illustrations Black men in Native American clothing. Still from Matewan. A hefty middle-aged white man in a dark suit with a smug grin shows a skeptical younger man in with a police badge on his jacket a piece of paper. 4 onlookers in early 20th century clothing look on from the foreground, surrounding a railroad track. The setting is hilly and green. James Earl Jones, in coal miner's garb, is flanked by two thin white men in a meeting setting. One has a gun, but they look more afraid than he is.

Anyway, I suspect it won't be much of a sacrifice to ignore the project if this is the visual sensibility.
An image from first Harry Potter film- Harry is in baggy clothes pushing a luggage cart with a trunk and caged white owl through a train station. The there are warm colors and contrast.Similar image from trailer of new series. He is running with the cart, his clothes fit well, and the photography is cold and flat.

I was leaning towards the Potter series being an unstoppable juggernaut, but if this is how the legions of people who never moved on to other books are reacting to the casting, maybe it will blow up after a few seasons.

I have learned with the deepest concern the news about Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor and suspicion of misconduct in public office. What now follows is the full, fair and proper process by which this issue is investigated in the appropriate manner and by the appropriate authorities.
In this, as I have said before, they have our full and wholehearted support and co-operation.
Let me state clearly: the law must take its course.
As this process continues, it would not be right for me to comment further on this matter. Meanwhile, my family and I will continue in our duty and service to you all.
