Democrats just helped avert a government shutdown. President Musk and Trump failed to get what they demanded. Republicans threatened to stop paying millions of workers while Democrats once again showed that they’re the only adults in the room.

The Constitution empowers Congress, not the president, to determine trade policy. Misusing tariffs can wreak havoc on our economy and raise costs for Americans. My opening remarks in today’s @jecdems.bsky.social hearing on president-elect Trump’s vow to implement massive tariff increases:

If course Trump doesn’t want the government to run smoothly. Chaos is all he wants so he can further his own interests. He has no respect for anything or institution unless he somehow directly benefits.

Can someone explain how MAGAts are able to simultaneously believe in so many diametrically opposed conspiracy theories? How was COVID-19 a Chinese bioweapon that leaked from a lab, but also supposedly harmless at the same time?

This is such a stupid take. Do we have our problems, yeah and especially around healthcare. But people forget how good we have it in the West and specifically America. Our nation’s poorest still have it better than billions around the globe.

The West needs to do something to help LGBT people around the world. It’s sad and scary to see all of the restrictions and such being put into place over the past few years or so around the world. Not to mention the backsliding of support for LGBT issues at home.

As a young guy, I understand the resentment, but I don’t get the way it is being expressed. What exactly needs to be done by moderates and left-wingers to win back young people and more specifically young men, I do not know. But I do know we’re heading done a dark path if nothing is done.

I’ve been liking Bluesky, but I’m afraid that this is just going to increase partisanship online. As liberals and normies abandon Twitter and move here the platform will just be surrendered to right-wing goons. Twitter may be garbage, but echo chambers don’t help anybody.

Short-term workforce training is one of the most promising (and popular!) policies out there to help folks without a college degree. Stood out for us again and again in our research with PPI. Working class voters are under no illusion: the 20th century job market is gone. Lets help people prosper.

Are there projects planned anywhere in the US to develop public transit into the hinterlands of metropolitan areas? It seems that would greatly help poor semi-rural communities with large swathes of people without cars.

Visiting my hometown area is so depressing. Seeing people that were normal and well adjusted that have become brain broken since Trump came into politics. Although I live in Chicago now, I still want to advocate for rural people, but it’s hard when they think your side is the literally Satan.

Milei has been lambasted in the West (for some good reasons). Yet, here he is proving his leadership acumen. Although I don’t think an approach like his would work in America or Europe, he is definitely what Argentina needs.

Mayor Johnson has to be one the most fiscally reckless mayors in the cities history. His pure incompetence gives a bad name to the city of Chicago and the Democratic Party. This whole budget fiasco just adds to the list of reasons he should resign.
