Caturday 1.3 is out: add the widget right after installing and it shows a cat straight away — no need to open the app first.

Side effect: during image processing, some hairy details are lost - fur and hair have been the most complicated objects to remove from a background for decades (I spent hours if not days on that back in my Photoshop days). You'll notice it in the moment the depth viewer kicks in over the normal […]

Widgets were running nicely, but that leaves the iOS hosting app as a mere CloudKit sync container - right? Or could we spice up a cat closeup? Sure, let's give them some "depth"! Again Vision plus Core ML: Depth Anything estimates a depth map, Vision separates foreground from background, LaMa […]

Widgets' seemingly close relationship to apps is compelling, but they suffer from severe limits during background updates (40 to 70 refreshes a day, and yes, there are backdoors: youtu.be/NdJ_y1c_j_I) and from memory pressure. So regular fetches of #caturday posts, showing their […]

#caturday started as a side-hustle during my time at Sketch, when we investigated bitmap background removal by means of Apple's Vision framework. I dug deeper and found interesting APIs solving some real hard problems I had tapped into back in my university days - one of them image […]
