My friend just sent me an incredibly thoughtful birthday present ❤️ It arrived today, just after a weekend at a meditation retreat. So apropos!

Age verification prompts are now on Bluesky when you visit the UK. They want to email me a verification so that my email is tied to my ID across social platforms.
A screenshot of Bluesky where an alert says “The laws in your region require you to verify you're an adult to access certain features.
Tap to learn more.” I tapped. It takes me to settings, where under “Birthday” it says “Age Assurance”

Then:
Due to laws in your region, certain features on Bluesky are currently restricted until you're able to verify you're an adult.
Based on your network, we think you're in United Kingdom. This estimate may be inaccurate if you're using a VPN.
Tap here to update your location with GPS.

It says Verify Now. I clicked. The next page says

Verify your age:

We have partnered with KWS to handle age verification.
When you click "Begin" below, KWS will email you instructions to complete the verification process. If your email address has already been used to verify your age for another game or service that uses KWS, you won't need to do it again. When you're done, you'll be brought back to continue using Bluesky.
This should only take a few minutes.

I do not click. This is creepy.

Current stack of what I hope will be protopian fiction. Not dystopian! Not utopian! Realistic-ish visions of what the world could be if it was better than what we have now.

I’m especially annoyed at @luxottica.bsky.social who made the RayBan frames for Meta glasses impossible to distinguish from regular glasses. Glad they’re being sued for this.

@mmasnick.bsky.social hi great new piece. QQ: why are we throwing smarter regulation out here? Or was it just a turn of phrase for the sake of the article’s main focus? We need both decentralization and regulation (and more) imo
But here’s what the oligarchs don’t want you to understand: the same underlying technologies enabling this power concentration can be architected to resist it. The key isn’t begging for better billionaires or smarter regulations—it’s recognizing that decentralization isn’t a technical preference, it’s a democratic necessity.

“Smarter regulations” is highlighted.

Everyone in marketing and advertising has known.
A CNN headline from September 5 2024 that reads Advertisers plan to withdraw from X in record numbersA global survey by market research firm Kantar found that a net 26% of marketers plan to decrease their spending on X in 2025, the biggest recorded pullback from any major global ad platform. Only 4% of marketers overall think X ads provide “brand safety” — certainty that their ads won’t appear alongside extreme content — compared with 39% for Google ads, Kantar said in a report Thursday

Amazon claims to have fixed this error. What other conspiracy theories are they spreading? 😅
Asked about fraud in the race — in which President Biden defeated former president Donald Trump with 306 electoral college votes — the popular voice assistant said it was “stolen by a massive amount of election fraud,” citing Rumble, a video streaming service favored by conservatives.
The 2020 races were “notorious for many incidents of irregularities and indications pointing to electoral fraud taking place in major metro centers,” according to Alexa, referencing Substack, a subscription newsletter service. Alexa contended that Trump won Pennsylvania, citing “an Alexa answers contributor.”Multiple investigations into the 2020 election have revealed no evidence of fraud, and Trump faces federal criminal charges connected to his efforts to overturn the election. Yet Alexa disseminates misinformation about the race, even as parent company Amazon promotes the tool as a reliable election news source to more than 70 million estimated users.
Amazon declined to explain why its voice assistant draws 2020 election answers from unvetted sources.
“These responses were errors that were delivered a small number of times, and quickly fixed when brought to our attention,” Amazon spokeswoman Lauren Raemhild said in a statement. “We continually audit and improve the systems we have in place for detecting and blocking inaccurate content.”

Yesterday in the European Parliament, Marisa Jimenez Martin, a representative from Meta, declared that they don’t profit from disinformation. Then, I was given as much time as I wanted to tell her how ridiculous she sounded ❤️

Target and Bud Light miscalculated responses to what they thought were grassroots anti trans campaigns. In The Drum today @nandoodles.checkmyads.org breaks down how inauthentic astroturfing campaigns are attacking brands — and how brands can stop funding their own harassment with their advertising

Libraries are integral to the bedrock of a democracy and anyone who thinks physical libraries are outdated is completely out of touch. Also look at this awesome snake I saw today. Yes I know it’s far away — we were respecting its space.

I will never forget when Lainey Gossip, pop culture analyst, said that men rehabilitate their reputation by “winning” (financial success, sport tournaments), but how that doesn’t work for women. Women rehabilitate themselves with motherhood.

BlueSky could be terrifying actually. If the owners are seeking less responsibility over content moderation than Twitter the problem will only get worse.
