Ah hmm, did you remember to put all the papers under your pillow? (Glad you're feeling a bit better!)

To remember the Great Lakes, we used to learn the acronym H.O.M.E.S. The Trump admin has torn down H.O.M.E.S. to replace it with S.H.A.M.E. It's just SO on the nose 😭😭😭

In truth: Any argument is only as strong as its premises. Being clear that a premise is based on intuitions about language or society or whatnot is just being honest with your interlocutor about the strength of your argument. This is an excellent feature of analytic philosophy.

Cat Saint-Croix @catsaintcroix.bsky.social · 27/08/2026
Insofar as the complaint is that it's intuitions all the way down, I don't for a moment believe Continental philosophy doesn't rely on author intuition. Analytic philosophy is just honest when it does this. And I, for one, embrace analytic crystal girlies.

I didn't expect kids these days to somehow ruin Battlestar Galactica rewatches, but here we are 😑

But have you heard that the meaning of "I" is the characteristic function picking out the speaker? Chilling stuff.

Cat Saint-Croix @catsaintcroix.bsky.social · 27/08/2026
That's a fair criticism! I do think modern analytic philosophy recognizes this (criticism of rampant, careless idealization is a central theme of the social turn, the rise of analytic feminism, etc). This seems like following the evolution of analytic philosophy into the present, not breaking it.

Break notwithstanding, I do think *we*, the modern academy, take the Circle as our progenitors, not the interlopers. Insofar as the question concerns the ideology that gave rise to and sustains the method, if we're all reading/teaching the Circle, I'm not seeing the relevance of the interlopers.

Cat Saint-Croix @catsaintcroix.bsky.social · 27/08/2026
Even so, doesn't analytic philosophy as we know it take a lot of its shape through the Vienna Circle? (Per my understanding, a rather anti-fascist group, having been forced to emigrate when the Nazis came to power. Am I misremembering this?)

Ah sure. Not to be a complete Millennial about it, but this seems like wha’s going on when Aeris dies in FFVII - an actual main character death is so incredibly shocking, but all of the other violence doesn’t really register.

Cat Saint-Croix @catsaintcroix.bsky.social · 19/08/2026
Ah interesting. I’m realizing that I wasn’t really thinking of Doom etc, just because it’s so cartoonish (because same in that context). I was thinking more like Resident Evil sort of games, where it’s much more individualized and significant.

Hmmmm okay, fair. The grantedness point is really interesting. Do you think it would hold for equally visceral visuals?

Cat Saint-Croix @catsaintcroix.bsky.social · 19/08/2026
Which do you find more affecting: video game violence or tv/movie violence? (Spouse, wildly, argues TV violence is more affecting. I refuse to be alone in the world about this.)

I think maybe some people don't know that it's okay to just complain about things over beers. Like, you don't actually *have* to write a column every time you're annoyed by The Youths. Sorry, The Female Youths.

And charter school regulation is, uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhm, less stringent.
020
Cat Saint-Croix @catsaintcroix.bsky.social · 29/07/2026
Also sort of private school and homeschooling, but mostly charters. Charter schools are often paid for using vouchers that send public money to them. So, many students choosing charters, threatens the nearby public schools because their attendance falls and funding is often tied to attendance.

Cat Saint-Croix @catsaintcroix.bsky.social · 29/07/2026
It’s anti-public school, pro-charter school rhetoric!

Cat Saint-Croix @catsaintcroix.bsky.social · 21/07/2026
Insofar as people’s receptiveness to evidence/argument/rhetoric is a function of how much they identify with the speaker and feel understood by them, I think it’s useful, yeah. Like, that’s what I think this tactic actually does, as far as its value for “conversion” is concerned.

Cat Saint-Croix @catsaintcroix.bsky.social · 21/07/2026
Hm. Maybe this is right. I literally just ran across this comment on a Reddit thread ask folks who moved to California what they notice lol

Cat Saint-Croix @catsaintcroix.bsky.social · 21/07/2026
I’ve always thought of this as an instrumental relationship. That is, rightwing people want these folks because they’ll be better ambassadors for center left conversions. (There’s some decent evidence in psychology on the effectiveness of this sort of technique for increasing credibility, too 🤷)
