WIP Wednesday: laying out the leaves for border number 4. #quiltsky #applique

WIP Wednesday: border number four in the scabrous stage, and I'm trying to get used to wearing a thimble again. So much faster and easier once accustomed, and no risk of running the very fine needle end into my finger. #quiltsky #applique #quilting
A wide border in rust-colored fabric spread on a table. At the top edge of the border are small traditional blocks set on point in blues, creams, and pinks, along the bottom edge are chevrons in alternating light blue and cream. Down the center of the border, green vines are being appliqued in place. Some pieces are basted in place and some are fully sewn. Because some of the vines will be covered with leaves, the appliquer is skipping the parts that will be hidden, so the vines have gaps. On the table above the border is the fabric used for the vines and a pencil case holding applique notions: needles in a fabric scrap, silk threads in various colors, pens and pencils, small scissors, etc.

Wide border strip for a quilt with dark rust background. The left side of the border is small traditional blocks in blues and creams, on the right side are parti-color chevrons in blue and cream. Morning glory vines with pale blue flowers are appliqued down the center of the piece along with a female mountain bluebird perched on a vine.

WIP progress pic, Friday 7/10/26. I really like dark backgrounds, but you gotta use light colors so the applique shows well, and that means you have to line them or back them so the colors stay true and the seams don't show, and ugh, just so much extra work! #quiltsky #applique
Wide applique border strip. The background is dark rust; on the left side are small traditional blocks in blues, pink, and cream, along the right edge are cream and blue chevrons. Morning glory vines with pale blue flowers fill the center strip and in the middle of those is a white blob shaped like a bird or a ghost basted in place. This is the lining for a fancy applique bird that will be sewn in place over the blob, and that will keep the dark background from showing under the bird.

WIP Wednesday. I swear this will look refined and elegant like the collage next to it when it's done, but right now this applique is definitely a 100% hot mess birb.
Western bluebird fabric collage resting on an unlit lightbox next to a partially finished applique version. With extra seam allowance all around, the applique is... bulgy, and rather odd looking. Various sewing tools are scattered around the two pieces: needles, a box of pins, scissors, and several spools of thread.

Piled fabrics in shades of blue on a small table. In the foreground are two inked drawings of female mountain bluebirds on newsprint paper with fabric pieces glued on like filling in a coloring page. Amusement for appliquers - can I get 6 more leaves? I've never forgotten a "use every scrap" quilter ranting about applique: "They just cut pieces every which way! Just right out of the middle!" It makes me laugh every time I take out a piece of "swiss cheese" fabric. #quilting #applique #quiltsky

Photo of text exchange from Tumblr:

homoquartz:

I've warmed up significantly towards the concept of small talk ever since I learned that its sole purpose is to make friendly noises.

as long as you smile and nod, people are satisfied. It's just to show that you are nice and there with good intentions. we're small in a big world and have to rely on other people to be decent to us, so we do our little human dance to each other to say, "I'm not here to hurt you, here's something we have in common, like the weather or sports or itchy sweaters, so we both know we're on the same team, we both agree on a basic fact, like that it is rainy or that being itchy is uncomfortable, and this proves we can get along. I'm being lighthearted and non-threatening right now."

small talk isn't to get to know a person. It's just a greeting to affirm you're buddies in the universe.

I am motivated by wanting the other person to know I am friendly, so I have gotten pretty decent at small talk when I used to hate it.

piratedgender: (posts a poem in response)

The cashier at the gas station asks me where I'm from

and when I say Ohio, he says "Go buckeyes"
which I understand as a stranger offering
language that can be shared. The way starlings
roost on a power line, scooching over
so the other can sit, flocked and fanning
feathers against rain and never in my life
have I seen a football game, but still I reply
"Go buckeyes"
which is a way of saying: I accept.
I would root with you in imaginary stands.
Cheer at the same time in a darkened bar.
We are more alike than not, us two.
Here, let me shift, shuffle. Shelter a moment
beneath this wing.

Appliqued morning glory flowers laid out in a row on a light board. I love visiting the western mountain parks in early summer - the waterfalls are always spectacular.
Falls Creek waterfall on Steven Canyon road in Mt Rainier National Park. Sunlight gilds the spray at the top of a narrow waterfall that splits into two white cascades about halfway down its plunge into a shadowed gorge. Moss covers the rocks on either side of the falls, and small trees are growing around it. Sunlight shines through the green leaves.
