I expect to recruit a PhD student this cycle! The Control and Decision Making Lab at WashU studies control, effort, and decision making, combining behavioral experiments with modeling and neuroimaging. If that sounds cool, check out our work: cdmlab.wustl.edu. How to apply: psych.washu.edu/apply

🚨 WashU is hiring! 🚨 As part of WashU’s +AI Initiative, the search includes tenure-track opportunities in Psychological & Brain Sciences for people who place AI or machine learning at the center of their research. I'm on the committee, so feel free to reach out with questions. Please repost!

Mind wandering is typically measured using rare, disruptive thought probes. This study shows that trial-by-trial fluctuations in attentional states can be inferred from behavior alone using a biased perceptual task and computational modeling. www.nature.com/articles/s44...

Second, Cathy @cathyzhang.bsky.social has developed a new framework to infer mind wandering (lapses of attention) from behavior. She combines the GLM-HMMs from @jpillowtime.bsky.social's group with a parametric version of the Sustained Attention to Response Task (SART). osf.io/preprints/ps...

Distractor-specific control adaptation in multidimensional environments - Nature Human Behaviour
Gheza and Kool show that, in multidimensional environments, people allocate attention to individual distractors on the basis of their interference with the current task. They develop a neural model that supports these findings and suggest that cognitive control theories need to be revised.

If you are at #SfN23, go check out the awesome work that Ata Karagoz @atabk.bsky.social is doing with me and Zach Reagh @zreagh.bsky.social! He uses behavioral (!) and neural RSA to measure the construction of cognitive maps for planning.

I'm an advisor for Applied Math undergrads with an application area in Psychology. It turns out that they are interested in math and psych, but often don't realize that there is any overlap between the two! So I put together a short reading list: gershmanlab.com/docs/Mathema...

Gave my first ever lecture in a big scary lecture hall 🎤 It sure felt different to prepare your own slides than to lead review sessions for just 40 people.
