Just one data point in the slow death of modern social life. The dinner party was always my favorite entertainment as an adult. Why so many people want to live like this is a mystery. www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/1...

Why Americans Stopped Throwing Dinner Parties
The share of adults who say they regularly have friends over has declined dramatically since 1975.

I find the adult enthusiasm for Halloween interesting and a bit strange. I can distinctly remember the point at which I lost all interest in it: my freshman year of high school. And just before that, what interest remained had devolved from trick or treating to getting into egg fights in the street.

I find it strange when people post and promote their writing for others to read, but never read or promote other people’s stuff, especially given that doing so requires no effort. It’s especially weird between followers. Working on a piece on the ways in which social media isn’t social.

What positive purpose is achieved by keeping “streak” statistics in NYT games? I understand the point of winning percentage data, but keeping track of “streaks” just seems like a way to incentivize playing every day. Sort of like WoW “dailies.” (Iykyk)

Well, it isn’t necessary. Indeed, I don’t think it has any non-practical value. I guess I don’t understand what “demanding” means, where one is in no position to demand, which is the position philosophers overwhelmingly are in when the issue moral proclamations.

I am skeptical of the described relation between morality and law, and think philosophers wildly overestimate the efficacy of the former. Indeed, I would agree with Anscombe that the force of it is almost entirely “mesmeric.” I’ve written quite a bit on it. cathoderayzone.com/acropolis/th...
