It’s been a pleasure working on this research. We set out to determine whether water-surface geometry could be determined using a single camera and how these measurements might help us to better understand river dynamics. We’d welcome any feedback on our pre-print: essopenarchive.org/doi/abs/10.2...

Our results show that restoration increased flood-wave travel time, with flood waters taking 25 minutes longer on average to move downstream after restoration. The restored reach also created more diverse flow conditions and expanded the wetted area, supporting improved habitat opportunities

Delighted to share that our new paper on the Goldrill Beck restoration project in Cumbria has been published in WRR. We investigated how re-meandering and reconnecting a historically straightened river to its floodplain altered the movement of water through the landscape tinyurl.com/2552c6w4

I’m delighted to share that our latest research has just been published in HESS. We developed an unsupervised workflow to estimate river surface velocities from videos. Testing on 11,000+ videos against 274 gauging measurements showed excellent agreement. hess.copernicus.org/articles/29/...

Last week we took 31 students to the Netherlands to look at physical geography, coastal processes, and climate change and adaption in action. Great to hear these student reflections that underscore how important field experience is to our discipline! @hassfacultyncl.bsky.social

Getting Lisflood to compile with GPU-accelerated solvers has reduced model runtime by 5-10x. If only I knew what I did differently for it to compile successfully compared to the dozen failed attempts. Guess I’ll be keeping this VM instance forever 🤷

For this site we used a standard Hikvision camera connected to Raspberry Pi via Ethernet. It’s probably a bit out of date now but we produced a handbook to document the setup: www.dropbox.com/s/r3zx8xpvoc...

It’s been great to spend a bit of time in the field recently. Here we are working with the National Trust to assess the effectiveness of a single intervention to enhance flows across a floodplain
