exactly since steamOS is made using linux as a base, plus the steam frame being ARM rather than x86 means that potentially we may see more games built for ARM too, not just x86 so hopefully macOS gaming will get a little better someday as a result but i don't see that ever truly happening

Wine/Crossover/Proton/etc ain't VMs if you use those, but it really is a shame that anti-cheat crap tends to not have native linux versions. Hopefully Valve's newer hardware + the Deck being.. *decently* popular of a choice for portable PC gaming will change that though.

if you have a beefy enough machine you could just run a Windows VM inside your linux install; that way you don't have to reboot for the few times you need a single little windows app that Wine can't handle correctly though, those few games' DRM likely won't enjoy the VM either..

just get whatever distro you want; it's not super speedy but if you want to try different ones before installing, you can usually try out the OS from the installation disk you create once you boot from said disk i'd personally recommend using KDE Plasma for the desktop environment though
