I know that the ‘AI’ hype grift is turbocharged by and aimed squarely at precisely the sort of investment bankers who make up BoA, but it’s still a bit insulting that they apparently had such trouble seeing through it. I saw through it right away and I’m an idiot.

I think I heard that one and it put me off crusts - one of my bullies had curly hair and I’ve harboured a deep-seated dislike for it ever since.

((Why someone would donate a used ball gag to a charity I don’t know. Like these are people who give us actual trash but still.))

Which has happened IRL sort of (someone donated a ball gag and it got out onto the shop floor because the sorter thought it was “something for dogs maybe?”).

Huh. I just dreamed that I had to explain to the nice old ladies at the op shop that the weird furniture we’d just got in was for BDSM and we couldn’t sell it.

Coming back to this I guess you do get some examples in PC gaming but they tend to be grimdark (see XCOM again). My eyes are old and can’t distinguish between all those greys and blacks, I want bright colours. It’s the same problem with hack-and-slash ARPGs really.

IDK there are probably philosophers and psychologists who’ve articulated this better than my rambling but the pandemic really took the lid off of peoples’ magical thinking and it rubs me the wrong way.

Saying ‘if you mask properly you don’t get sick’ is the inverse of ‘you got sick so you must not have been masking properly’; it displaces the failure of the ritual talisman onto the person experiencing that failure rather than confronting the fact that the talisman isn’t real.

Emily @cat-appreciator.bsky.social · 15h
Masking lowers your likelihood of getting sick but unless you’re leaving the house in a hazmat suit with an independent air supply the chance is never zero.

Emily @cat-appreciator.bsky.social · 15h
I think a lot these days about magical ritual behaviour as exemplified in physical talismans. I have my mask so disease can’t get me, or I have my assault rifle so government tyranny can’t get me, or more abstractly I’m a good Christian so God would never let that happen to me. That sort of thing.

Shall we do a bit of theory? I think we need the proper language to describe all of this, and I think the concept we need to discuss is 'necropolitics'. 🧵

I recall reading something recently about protecting coral from bleaching by giving them little undersea umbrellas. Obviously not a solution that scales well but if healthy coral can help bleached coral recover that fast then it might be useful.

I’ve been considering giving my villains some sort of deeply embarrassing trait. Because current events have taught us that evil isn’t tortured or nuanced, it’s sadism done by total losers.

“I think we'll look back on the last decade as a time when social media gave previously marginalized groups the ability to speak directly to elites and, as a result, elites lost their minds.” --Michael Hobbes I think the reality is funnier. The marginalized were merely talking to themselves.

You’d think it would be easier to find isometric turn-based RPGs these days given the popularity of Fire Emblem. If I could get a modern FE:Awakening or a fantasy XCOM sort of thing I’d be a happy camper.

Also it feels like the idea that villains have to have some nuance or trauma or grand goal driving their decisions is a purely literary convention. IRL villains are just evil manchildren who hurt people because they enjoy it or just don’t care about the damage they do.

Capitalism has been extractive from the start. I really think that if society survives the 21st century we really need to factor in ‘externalities’ in planning. No more saying ‘oh well, I’m legally indemnified, it’s not MY problem’.

A reminder for those at the back.
A redraw of the i nice panel from Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns, where Batman snaps a rifle in two over his knee.

He says "THIS is the weaponnof the enemy. We do not NEED it. We will not USE it."

I've replace the rifle with a plank of wood labelled "AI Slop"
