Cassie @cassiemph.bsky.social · 05/09/2026I caught Covid at the end of 2025, and all those fearful messages on the damage it does went from “yeah I know it’s bad I’m trying to avoid it!” to “oh great now I can feel bad while I feel bad” 140
Cassie @cassiemph.bsky.social · 05/09/2026Wow yeah that context would have changed my reaction to this completely. Context matters so much. I’m sorry that guy is such a dickhead, and I’m glad for an opportunity to block him I think Guys Like That will be like that on any topic. He was likely insufferable before Covid 120
Cassie @cassiemph.bsky.social · 05/09/2026But no one believes public health is useful, especially when it works 020
Cassie @cassiemph.bsky.social · 05/09/2026I believe this is because we have been taught explicitly and implicitly that shame and fear are acceptable motivators for correct behaviours (and also individualism duh) There is no evidence that these work long term, but they persist (look at graphic photos on tobacco products, a gold standard) 110
Cassie @cassiemph.bsky.social · 05/09/2026I just really wanted to feel safe with people here, and it just isn’t clear what the context is, so I’m left feeling defensive that *I* never shame anyone, and in fact as the only person at work who makes effort to prevent disease transmission I am disadvantaged and if I didn’t, even more so 010
Cassie @cassiemph.bsky.social · 05/09/2026This ramble is just unprocessed trauma, and I imagine most of the people responding also have unprocessed trauma around ableism, covid, and the hostage situation that is capitalism. 110
Cassie @cassiemph.bsky.social · 05/09/2026Obviously these are systemic failures, and individuals shouldn’t have to be responsible for overcoming massive barriers (lack of clean air initiatives for example) And also “people shaming each other” is also focused on the individual, isn’t it? 110
Cassie @cassiemph.bsky.social · 05/09/2026Without context, idk, maybe you have a different social landscape from me and people all mask, and then are snits to each other about when it’s imperfect and they get sick. Ableism is both why we shame people for getting sick and also harass disabled people for trying to not become more disabled 110
Cassie @cassiemph.bsky.social · 05/09/2026To clarify, I am very sympathetic toward people who are sick/get sick. But a vast majority of the people who are getting sick do nothing to mitigate it. It’s hard to prioritise “don’t be mean to people who don’t make any effort to save themselves” over “please stop harassing people who are masking” 120
Cassie @cassiemph.bsky.social · 05/09/2026Would you happen to know where this person might be found? No reason, just a name, phone number, would be sufficient 120
Cassie @cassiemph.bsky.social · 05/09/2026I am overwhelmed by the urge to say something snarky and feeling quite prickly that I had to see this. But I would like to think that our goal is actually one and the same: people receive appropriate care and preventable illnesses are prevented, and no shame gets in the way of that 140
Cassie @cassiemph.bsky.social · 05/09/2026I hope you find a really random time to wear it that feels good! I’ve been trying to convince myself to enjoy things for no reason at all 110
Cassie @cassiemph.bsky.social · 05/09/2026It really seems to depend on the person more than anything! I know many USians who have stronger accents than me and have been here longer. I did have a head start with getting hitched to an Aussie 030
Cassie @cassiemph.bsky.social · 05/09/2026I didn’t see the posts either but yes, the no replies function is great! (When I remember it exists) 020
Cassie @cassiemph.bsky.social · 05/09/2026I had two different groups in 15 min this afternoon!! I’m about to lose it! 110
Cassie @cassiemph.bsky.social · 05/09/2026Do I know anyone on here who works with Te Kāika or knows someone who does? Any capacity, doesn’t have to be clinical. 012
Cassie @cassiemph.bsky.social · 05/09/2026I love when people almost get it: oh you think the confederate flag is bad but the US flag represents FREEDUM? Gotcha! Yes, I believe they are both trash, both represent imperialism, slavery, genocide, human suffering, etc. Glad you could catch up 120
Cassie @cassiemph.bsky.social · 05/09/2026Me, tossing people off the balcony to the street below, where, regretfully there is not a large cactus collection waiting to receive themstatic.klipy.comGet Off My ShipAlt: Black and white footage of someone getting tossed overboard with the text reading “Get Off My Ship” 010
Cassie @cassiemph.bsky.social · 05/09/2026The one they like is too tall, so the apples all end up bruised messes in the grass anyway. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ 010
Cassie @cassiemph.bsky.social · 05/09/2026I am not fit for public, let me sequester myself for your safety, you suicidal lemmings in ties 110
Cassie @cassiemph.bsky.social · 05/09/2026I am ENTIRELY too perimenopausal today to receive ANY number of unexpected people on my patio, but two sets of door knockers in 15 might legitimately lead to violence 130
Cassie @cassiemph.bsky.social · 05/09/2026YES. the special food sits on the shelf and is special, until its special in the bin 050
Cassie @cassiemph.bsky.social · 05/09/2026I refuse to learn about any new stupid stuff today. Try again tomorrow 030
Cassie @cassiemph.bsky.social · 05/09/2026😂 this is getting too real. The people who just Eat The Berries get berries and everyone with some weird saving inclination get Mouldy Goop 130
Cassie @cassiemph.bsky.social · 05/09/2026This happens A LOT. If the US comes up, they will say something vaguely critical or disparaging and I will name it as a global imperialist force, or that it is garbage and they look like I just grew a second head and it sang a perfect aria. 010
Cassie @cassiemph.bsky.social · 05/09/2026Random kiwi: yeah they have really poor food regulations in the US 😏 Me: yes, it’s a trash ass country full of trash ass policies RK: 😳 Can people not tell I’m from the US or are they just surprised I know more about it than they do…? 110
Cassie @cassiemph.bsky.social · 05/09/2026Am I doin the math right? I can’t tell, I grew up on a cattle ranch in rural Texas where I dropped out of high school. That’s my excuse and I’m sticking to it 130
Cassie @cassiemph.bsky.social · 05/09/2026Berries are an excellent example of how this happens with food! They have such a short shelf life, we cannot put off the eating for even a second longer 120
Cassie @cassiemph.bsky.social · 05/09/2026I try to eat as much as I can and get sick of it by the time it goes out of season, so I have another year before it’s back 020
Cassie @cassiemph.bsky.social · 05/09/2026100% Sometimes people have big emotions in the face of someone’s suffering when they have no way to make it better. We need to have sufficient distress tolerance for knowing people are messy and in pain sometimes. And we have to just witness, we cannot always fix it 130
Cassie @cassiemph.bsky.social · 05/09/2026I think that it’s good to remind ourselves that while we talk about “rural” and all mean something different, most research stats have a standardised definition 110
Cassie @cassiemph.bsky.social · 05/09/2026Like what? What are the aggregate differences that transcend the heterogeneity? 000
Cassie @cassiemph.bsky.social · 05/09/2026This shows that divide/heterogeneity well. There are rural folks with little education. There are also rural folks with postgraduate certifications. There are a multitude of rural experiences 120
Cassie @cassiemph.bsky.social · 04/09/2026This is the last thing I will say on AI today If AI spontaneously becomes sentient, why the fuck would we assume it would automatically become a cruel ruler? Why wouldn’t we assume it would be exploited by the same awful humans exploiting us now? Which is more likely, ya think?? 010
Cassie @cassiemph.bsky.social · 04/09/2026But seriously, my goal for the rest of the year is to de centre this university just a little. I’m taking a painting class at the polytech, will see what step 2 is for 2027 110
