Over the last 6 weeks I have been attending Wednesday evening poetry sessions with @antoshwojcik.bsky.social and Bad Betty Press on "the poem hinges on the image". The last session was yesterday, and for some reason I thought today would be a good day to share this poem that I drafted last week.

A poem reads:
You had kept your paper crown on since Christmas,
and in the summer you noticed your bin had begun to march.
It had been uprooted like a wind-felled ancient oak.
You followed, of course, spied on it from afar,
slept like a rat among the hedgerow-birds.
Each step you felt somehow lighter,
like the empty tin can you tossed
down the dried-up well down the road.
You followed your bin to the coast, cliffs
crumbling like sponge cake and for terror your knees
began to wobble like jelly on a paper plate.
I’m sure you felt silly when you noticed your paper crown
had slipped under your nose to rest on your shoulders.
Did you tear it off, in the end?

I had the idea to write (& post) some short poems every so often which are inspired by the title of a poetry magazine or press. They probably won’t be my best work, but if I enjoy it I’ll keep going. It’s a show of my appreciation for people who choose to dedicate their time to publishing poems.

I am waiting to hear back on a poetry journal submission. I should have expected a response by now. I always give some extra leeway before chasing up. I think “they must be seriously considering my work” However, I do keep obsessively checking emails. This happens every few months.
