If you’re looking for something scary this spooky season, consider the anthology from @starsandsabers.bsky.social, OF DREAD, DECAY AND DOOM. It features my story, “Home”—the most suspenseful thing I’ve written. Get it wherever you get your books: www.starsandsabers.com/books/of-dre...

"The Replacement Killers" is all style. It's a high-gloss version of a Hong Kong action picture, made in America but observing the exuberance of a genre where surfaces are everything. The characters are as flat as figures on a billboard, but look at the way everything is filmed in saturated color, and anything that moves makes a metallic whooshing sound that ends in a musical chord, and how when the hero walks down a corridor at a car wash, it's done with a tilt and a zoom. In a movie like this, the story is simply a device to help us tell the beginning from the end.

Also, this is one of the worst reviews I’ve ever read:
English subtitles do not go well with a foreign-language action film. If you spend time reading the titles, then you can't really appreciate the action. But if you stare raptly at the action, then you often don't know the reasons behind what's going on."Hard-Boiled" is being presented here in what's described as the "full-length director's cut," which means that it runs 127 minutes. The movie was apparently abbreviated by the Hong Kong censors, who objected to the violence. Just why, I'm not sure. Films as packed with violence as this, but with little in the way of a coherent story to give the violence meaning, are no less serene than "Swan Lake," if somewhat more instructive. The quaint story involves Tequila, a tough-guy Hong Kong cop, his chaste affection for Teresa, a woman who works in his office, and his unspoken affection for Tony, an undercover cop who goes through pure hell doing his duty.
"Hard-Boiled" often has a smokily atmospheric, Ridley Scott sort of look to it, but until I learn Mandarin, or until someone adds an English language soundtrack to "Hard-Boiled," I'Il reserve judgment about Mr. Woo's place in the hierarchy of action-film directors. Hard-Boiled

Got to see Bruce Campbell live today. Albeit from somewhat far away. Still amazing. And his new movie, ERNIE & EMMA (which is touring Alamo Drafthouses around the country), is great.

If you’re looking for a good horror read for this year’s spooky season, I highly recommend THOR. It’s a werewolf story told from the perspective of a family’s German shepherd. One of my all-time favorites. It was made into the movie BAD MOON, which is a pretty good adaptation.

Also I had no idea it inspired INFERNAL AFFAIRS. Which means THE DEPARTED exists because of this movie.
Influence
Face/Off is said to have inspired Infernal Affairs.
Director Andrew Lau stated he wanted to depict a more realistic situation; instead of a physical face change, Lau wanted to have the characters swap identities. 43! The concept of "bian lian" or "change face", a technique traditionally used in Chinese opera, may have been used here to depict the fluid and seamless morph of Chen and Lau's characters' identities between the "good" and "bad" sides.
Infernal Affairs, in turn, has spawned several adaptations, notably The Departed directed by Martin Scorsese, which won the Academy Award for Best Picture.

Really loving the audiobook for @harlancoben.bsky.social’s PLOT TWIST. He’s a damn great storyteller and motivational speaker. I’m enthralled and inspired…and also seriously considering the Uber thing. (You’ll know what this last thing is when you read the book.)
