When you can take a chance on a...well, seasoned, I guess, and well known dumpster fire, you have to take it, right? How much is Monken regretting taking this job? Enough to sabotage himself already?

Maybe it's step one, to see if it gets any negative attention from him. If he cares enough, they can start leaking details elsewhere, more friendly. If not, bide your time and wait for her to do something weirder, then try again. Just a thought.

It's the Shaq problem. How to fairly call a game keeping in mind the discrepancy. On this call, though...bro took the charge like Vlade.

A couple of his facial expressions early in the match very clearly showed that he had seen this all before, and was not having it. I thought it ended up a well played, well reffed game, even with the drama at the end.

Absolutely. The USMNT have to grind out games like this all the time, which is why it was so (pleasantly) surprising to see them work Paraguay over in the first match. If only FIFA could assign a ref who was used to seeing it...

I think Randy Quaid said it best in Days of Thunder, and I'm paraphrasing here: Every time he walks out to give a press conference, he ends up looking like a monkey fucking a football out there.

It feels more like it's what they think they want, what they think will make them happy. But they can't make sense of their own misery. And they are in so deep right now, so used to that dopamine hit. Punching holes in the boat while complaining of drowning. Maybe I'm splitting hairs, sorry.

Factor in the fact that the people in positions of power are either too dumb to know history or too arrogant to think it applies to them, and that they only speak and listen to people who agree with them, and here we are in the dumbest timeline.

When my grandmother had dementia, she seemed clear at times, but she thought it was the 1950's. Our current foreign strategy seems cut from a time when it was normal for the US to topple a govt they didn't agree with, and ignores all the lessons we've learned from such behavior in the meantime.

It feels like people who want AI to be human are either desperate for human contact, desperate to have you adopt their AI model, or don't actually understand other humans at all.

Thank you for capturing what it's felt like in Minneapolis for the past few months (has it been months? Feels like years, could be weeks). You shined a light on the different ways people are helping, and you did it in a way that really highlights the humanity that makes this region unique.

NYT focused on Vought, Gunasekara, Clark, and Brightbill as the zealots who believe climate change is a hoax. They believe that global warming is not happening, regardless of the scientific evidence. Only in this administration would they have a microphone. I hope for what you hope.

Absolutely. It may have taken a while, and that's not great, but he's taken responsibility and he eventually found the right path. That's worth something, in my mind. I know others disagree, and that's understandable.

Think of how much has been normalized already. Sometimes I have to make an active effort to remind myself where the line is, and I am firmly opposed to what's happening on moral grounds, legal grounds, even common sense. Our brains are not wired for this level of doublespeak, and weaker minds cave.

Not to make excuses, but I think we underestimate the wall of disinformation that Fox News and other outlets shove at folks on a daily basis. They stick to easy talking points, repeat them loudly and often, and overwhelm people. People truly believe that, however bad he is, the alternative is worse.

Plus the number of times he said "unprecedented cooperation" really felt deliberate, like he was trying to drive a wedge between the people and the MN administration. And for what? This unprecedented cooperation just amounts to roughly the same amount of cooperation from before.

It is not surprising that Bezos rolled over to a bully. I'm sure he was stuffed in plenty of lockers, he could recognize a boss level bully immediately. All that money, the weightlifting, the martial arts...none of it mattered. He had a chance to stand up for his middle school self, and he folded.

Honest question: why can't the authorities access files in the cloud? Would they need family permission (my guess is they would get it)? Lack of the physical item shouldn't inhibit accessing the files. Or am I wrong? I've been wrong before.

There's no statute of limitations on murder, and he is in the ICE employee database if Bovino knows who he is. Minnesotans are patient, and I think someone will give him up to save their own skin down the line. And I don't think the President can pardon a state charge. His time will come.

I'm guessing they are so used to making excuses, hiding from the moral and ethical questions by using whataboutism, that they can't even recognize the moral dilemma anymore. They get their marching orders from the top and don't question them, and in return they feel relieved of responsibility.

It's a good learning experience for the rest of us - there but for the grace of God go I, right? Watching people I know and care about work so hard to justify what's happening makes me work harder to make sure I don't end up doing that somewhere else.

I try to be optimistic, knowing that America has lived through dark times before and continued to progress after. But I do not enjoy living through it. My kids seem almost numb to it, as if they just sort of expect bad things to happen now.

Okay, yeah, that sounds like similar tactics but at lesser scale than Minneapolis. They've shown up to schools, Costco and Home Depot parking lots, they've set up checkpoints on the highway. They were even going door-to-door the other day in an immigrant-heavy neighborhood.

casettedeck.bsky.social @casettedeck.bsky.social · 18/01/2026
Some sound bites I've heard, and this is consistent with his first term, is the belief that the immigrants they know are "good ones," and that there are millions of "bad ones out there." Where those bad ones are is up for debate, but Fox tells them it's in blue cities, so it must be in blue cities.
010
casettedeck.bsky.social @casettedeck.bsky.social · 17/01/2026
From what I've heard in red states, they wanted it...in other states. They are not in favor of ICE or the National Guard in their state / town (some form of not needing the help), but they fully believe that blue cities especially are enabling illegal immigration and, by extension, crime.

Someone who worked in Washington noted that the biggest change Gingrich brought was a change in tone that has persisted. Specifically, people who disagreed with you were no longer good people with bad ideas, they were bad people, evil people, the enemy. Sounds familiar.

Just traveled to a city in a red state, and nothing like Minneapolis is happening there. When they hear the full extent, they are absolutely shocked. They mostly can't comprehend what it would be like to be in that, day after day. At least, that was my experience, for what it's worth.
