🚨 URGENT: A lost sheep wandered onto Catskill Animal Sanctuary. After no owner came forward, she’s now an official CAS resident, but she’s still very scared and in need of an emergency shear and medical care.

Jess and Schmidt: Rescued Turkeys Find Their Forever Homes at Catskill Animal Sanctuary – Catskill Animal Sanctuary

Catskill Animal Sanctuary @casanctuary.org · 21/07/2025

Jess and Schmidt were never supposed to live beyond a few weeks. They’re broad-breasted white turkeys: the kind raised and killed by the millions for food each year. Luckily, these two will never know that kind of suffering. At CAS, they’re free to live long, healthy, peaceful lives.

This morning, we caught two of our beloved horses, Dharma and MJ, standing calmly while a few pigeons perch on their backs. It’s a small but profound example of the gentleness that lives within the heart of all animals when they are given the chance to simply be. This is the spirit of sanctuary. 🐴🕊️

Catskill Animal Sanctuary @casanctuary.org · 10/07/2025

At CAS, we provide intensive care tailored to each individual’s needs. For Jess and Schmidt, that includes special diets, regular medical care, weight management, and lots of enrichment. While the industry sees them as commodities, we see them as individuals worthy of long, peaceful lives.

074

Catskill Animal Sanctuary @casanctuary.org · 10/07/2025

Unlike turkeys in nature who can live 10+ years, broad-breasted turkeys suffer from drastically shorter lifespans due solely to the way we breed them to serve the food system.

153

Catskill Animal Sanctuary @casanctuary.org · 10/07/2025

In the meat industry, turkeys are typically slaughtered between 12-16 weeks old. Beyond that age, their bodies begin to break down under the strain: joint issues, heart failure, and mobility problems are all common. Even feather growth can be a challenge, as we’ve already seen in Jess and Schmidt.

111

Catskill Animal Sanctuary @casanctuary.org · 10/07/2025

Different as these two turkeys are, they have one crucial thing in common: they were never meant to live a long life. Jess and Schmidt belong to the most common commercial turkey breed, engineered through generations of artificial and selective breeding to grow unusually large in just a few weeks.

Catskill Animal Sanctuary @casanctuary.org · 10/07/2025

RESCUE ANNOUNCEMENT! 🚨‼️ Meet Jess & Schmidt — two white broad-breasted turkeys who, at last, have found their forever home here at CAS. These two recently arrived to us from another rescue that was at capacity. Jess is fearless, sassy and curious, while Schmidt is quiet, thoughtful and gentle.

If your heart is tugging at you to do something different, something that brings healing, justice, or hope, listen. The world needs more leapers.

100

Catskill Animal Sanctuary @casanctuary.org · 26/06/2025

🌟 To those dreaming of starting your own nonprofit: Let Kathy’s story be your reminder that bold ideas matter. That love, when paired with persistence and purpose, can reshape the world. The road won’t always be easy. But as Kathy shared in her farewell letter: “I took a leap, and love caught me.”

110

Catskill Animal Sanctuary @casanctuary.org · 26/06/2025

Today, nearly 25 years later, our organization stands as living proof of what one person’s courage, grit, and love can build. Kathy will be retiring as Executive Director on June 30th. While we’ll miss her presence in daily operations, her legacy will continue to shape CAS’ future for generations.

100

Catskill Animal Sanctuary @casanctuary.org · 26/06/2025

In 2001, Kathy Stevens walked away from a stable career and a steady paycheck to follow a vision: to create a haven for farmed animals, a place where their lives would be valued, and their stories would change hearts.

100

Catskill Animal Sanctuary @casanctuary.org · 17/06/2025

So why do we cherish one species and exploit the other? At CAS, we see cows as the unique, sentient individuals they are. If you wouldn’t harm a dog, consider extending that same compassion towards cows— and all farmed animals. 🐮💚🐶

000

Catskill Animal Sanctuary @casanctuary.org · 17/06/2025

Intelligent — cows can learn their names, solve problems, and have the ability to remember human faces for years. Social — just like dogs, cows thrive in communities. They have best friends and will also go through intense grieving periods when loved ones are lost.

100

Catskill Animal Sanctuary @casanctuary.org · 17/06/2025

Just like our beloved campion dogs, cows are: Loving — they are capable of forming deep emotional bonds with family, friends, and of course, humans who treat them kindly. Playful — yes, cows do play! From kicking up their heels to chasing balls and each other, they love having fun.

100

Catskill Animal Sanctuary @casanctuary.org · 17/06/2025

“Wow, this cow acts just like my dog!” This was an exclamation made by one of our recent visitors to our Sanctuary while on a tour. While it can be surprising to discover just how incredible farmed animals are, we know this to be true: cows are so much more than our world gives them credit for.

CAS Resident, Milton, is a black-and-white Holstein steer.

CAS staff dog, Scout, a black-and-white male mixed breed.

This Pride Month, and always, we affirm: Love is love. Liberation is for all. And none of us are free until all of us are. 🏳️‍🌈

020

Catskill Animal Sanctuary @casanctuary.org · 03/06/2025

🌈 Even in nature, love knows no bounds. Over 1500 animal species exhibit same-sex attraction and behaviors, or diverse gender expressions. We have witnessed many animal residents form devoted bonds that remind us queerness is not an anomaly. It is a natural and beautiful part of life.

100

Catskill Animal Sanctuary @casanctuary.org · 03/06/2025

🌈 As civil rights activist Fannie Lou Hamer once said, "Nobody's free until everybody's free." At Catskill Animal Sanctuary, we hope to teach that intersectionality doesn't just matter, it is essential. Human and animal liberation are not competing causes, but deeply connected struggles.

110

Catskill Animal Sanctuary @casanctuary.org · 03/06/2025

🌈 Justice isn't single issue. It must be intersectional. The same forces that exploit and devalue non-human animals— power, control, and the belief that some lives matter more than others— also uphold systems of racism, homophobia, transphobia, ableism, and other forms of oppression.

110

Catskill Animal Sanctuary @casanctuary.org · 03/06/2025

At CAS, we exist to champion compassion for ALL beings who experience marginalization, discrimination, or violence simply for being who they are. As we celebrate Pride Month, let’s talk about why advocacy for farmed animals is deeply connected to the advocacy for LGBTQ+ communities:

School hatching projects teach the wrong lesson: that life is disposable. We can do better, with real compassion...not cruelty disguised as education. 🌱 (4/5)

When the lesson ends, most chicks are abandoned, killed, or left in homes that can't care for them. They’re treated like science experiments, not living beings. (3/5)

At Catskill Animal Sanctuary, we rescue the forgotten victims of school egg projects. Harold, a sleepy one-eyed rooster, was saved after being "discarded" in Philadelphia. (2/5)
