Hey, Shep; didn't you sometimes show up on the later episodes of "Kevin And Ursula Eat Cheap"? You could recount harrowing tales of being tortured with horrible horrible food....

The scene in Jim Butcher's "Death Masks" where there's a huge wizard's duel in Wrigley Field and no mundane humans notice because it's isolated by huge parking lots. Except Wrigley HAS no parking lots, and it's famously surrounded by apartments that look directly down into the ballfield.

Very much like the argument my late mother made in the 1970s about mixed-race marriages: "Think of the children!" The awful logic, unpacked, is that it's apparently bad to abuse a kid with one white parent, but fine if the kid has no white parents. When called on this, my mom had no defense.

If you genuinely don't see the "goat", it's looking over its shoulder to the right side of the image (the dark bar is its mouth) and the beak of the bird forms the ear. I see 80% bird myself, but I can make myself see a goat. Especially if I squint a bit. (But the eyes are wrong.)

I am more and more happy that every time my phone or computer has offered to save my credit card number or other sensitive information, I've said "Hell, no!" Because I wouldn't put it past the techbros to install that software during an update without asking, and have it running without my consent.

(Not at this restaurant; at another one he owns). I felt like I'd somehow "made it" as a diner, having my opinion of the dish be passed along. (It was excellent, by the way.)

I dined at a really nice French restaurant recently (it was our 35th anniversary) and I ordered the special, Wild Hare Roullade. It was the first day it was on the menu and I was the first to order it. Chef came by to ask my opinion. Then he got on his phone to the owner. Who has Michelin stars.

Honestly, you could have an ALL-bard group and make it work. The canonical D&D party is Fighter, Cleric, Mage, Thief... but there are bard subclasses that cover all those archetypes reasonably well.

Got a measles titer; found out my 50+ years-ago vaccination has faded to non-existence. Got an MMR booster last week. Seems a very good time to recommend older folks get a measles titer to check immunity... or just go ahead and get the booster. Because disease outbreaks rarely stay localized.

I truly hate that this is a thing you (or anyone!) has to even consider. Good on you for planning for the worst and I'm glad it didn't happen... but what the f**k happened to this country to make this even a consideration?!? <Rhetorical. I know what happened.>

There are three bards in my adventuring party (that's not as crazy as it sounds; there are 12 players and we play with whoever shows up, usually about 5-6 players) and all happen to be female characters; we call them, collectively, "The Mean Girls" because their Vicious Mockery is always devastating

Please please please tell me that this Actual Play event was filmed and will be available to watch on youtube.... I would *love* to be able to watch all those amazingly creative people playing the game I love. (If it wasn't filmed or won't be available... I'm still glad it happened!)

Whoops, missed this was an old story. But my response stands; if social media companies want to decide I'm a kid, I'll let them. It's not like I use social media to surf pron... And I *don't* want the Survelliance State getting that much more info on me, no matter how secure they insist they are.

I don't care if Discord thinks my senior-citizen ass is only 15; I'm not giving it my ID or my face. If that means I can't go to the half-dozen feeds I actually use... I won't be heartbroken. It's not like I use it much, anyway.

My hack for hotel pillows -- grab a towel (or two) from the bathroom and fold/scrunch it as necessary to build up the required level of height and/or support. Can be stuffed into the pillowcase under the pillow, or just folded under the pillow, to suit. It's not perfect, but it's a whole lot better

FWIW, at Windycon in Chicago the convention green room is STILL open to all guests and panelists. Come to Chicago and we'll have a diet Coke cold for you! Ok, several diet Cokes. But probably no burritos. Unless you assemble one yourself from Cheetos, granola bars, and chocolate chip cookies.

In my previous post, I meant the generic "you"; didn't mean you specificaly. No intention to mis-gender you. You're also a man if you say you are, or enby if that works for you! Mostly, whatever gender anyone is, is nobody's business but their own, and NOBODY SHOULD CARE what bathroom they use.

I'm a cis woman who visually presents femme, but who, on the phone, is almost always called "sir". Tenor voice. (My mother sang baritone in a quartet during WWII, so I come by it naturally.) To hell with all gender-policing idiots. You're a woman if you say you are. This old lady has your back.

Thank you. I'd seen references to this... I started to write "controversy", but after reading the whole thing, I think I'll go with "train wreck"... and this essay is even more clueless than I anticipated. Boils down to "Hey writers, embrace the plagiarism machine! Everybody's doing it!"

I love an aged sharp cheddar. Aged to the point where it crumbles instead of slices. Aged so it has tiny salt crystal inclusions. MMmmmmMMmmmm...... (But pretty much any strong-flavored cheese is lovely. Roquefort. Stilton. Gruyere.... Just don't give me something bland and tasteless...)

Fruit rollups, of course! They come in green... I made sure to get multiple colors of peeps, so there was a visual variety of peep-shi options.

I started weekly online board gaming with friends during 2020. Sometimes with actual boards with a camera aimed at them, sometimes just a board game app online. We've kept it going for five years, and it has really helped several peoples' social lives who can't get out much for one reason or another

Figs. Because of the whole wasp thing. I heard about that, and now I Just. Can't. Even. (Also, dark green vegetables and alcohol and licorice because I'm a supertaster, but that's a "this tastes like poison" thing, not a squick thing.)

I think there's a punctuation error in that cute little cartoon from BlueSky. It says "omg, no way" and it SHOULD say "omg, no way!!" and maybe follow up with "absolutely not!" and/or "kill it with fire!".... (Seriously, who asked for a group chat feature? Why would we want it? That's email!)

The article notes that they didn't actually ask divorce rates; the assumption baked into the data is that anyone with a previous marriage was divorced. So the survey lumps widows/widowers in with divorced people. Probably doesn't skew the data much, but it's worth noting.

I saw him at a con earlier this year. He was sitting at a table in the hotel bar, by himself. I passed that bar regularly on my way to programming, and he was always there. And always alone. By the end, I think he'd have welcomed being berated by a Woman in a Fabulous Hat, just for the company.

My husband made this jewelry box for a friend. (Laser-cut wood - @neolithicsheep.bsky.social might find it interesting...) Her jewelry has never been safer, but she might lose a hand getting out a bracelet....
Wooden jewelry box, about 8"x6"x6", laser cut and assembled with dark stained outer layers and a lighter under layer giving a deliberately distressed appearance. Don't pay any attention to the red verticle-pupil eyes or the white gnashy teeth...

(Plans from

-- very high-quality patterns well worth every penny)

I was 18 years old when Victor/Victoria came out; my folks took me to see it. ("It has Julie Andrews in it!") I spent the whole movie paralyzed, because I thought it was *hilarious* but I wasn't sure I was allowed to laugh at sex jokes (and gay jokes and trans jokes) sitting next to my PARENTS...

Back in the early 1990s, I made it a policy never to post or email anything that I wouldn't want to be read by my best friend, my worst enemy, my boss, my mother, my husband, the cops, or my (hypothetical) children. This policy has stood me in good stead for 35 years.

My mother was an only child; she was born in 1926. She had *at least* two siblings (she was old enough to remember two; there may have been more before she was born or when she was a pre-memory infant) who died in infancy; "blue babies" she said. She did not seem to think it was unusual.
