My latest for @playthegame-org.bsky.social, where I attempt a true cost carbon accounting of the Canada-Mexico-USA World Cup, and conclude that it will be the deadliest sporting event in history, producing emissions that will kill more than 70,000 people. I call this madness "Infantinocide."

FIFA’s 2026 World Cup could emit 70 million tons of CO2 with deadly human costs

The 2026 World Cup will be the biggest yet, and possibly the most destructive. College professor Tim Walters projects that the World Cup could emit nearly 70 million tons of CO2 and lead to the premat...

Cristiano Ronaldo’s new oil funded contract is reportedly worth $675m 😳 While the Loss and Damage Fund to help poorer countries harmed by climate disasters has received contributions totalling $358m 😕 That’s around 0.1% of the $300 billion estimated annual cost of disaster related losses 😬

It's time to ban sponsorship of fossil fuels through football.

Unfortunately, as long as climate change remains a back cover story, we will continue to compromise the abilities of future generations in experiencing the emotions and memories that football can create.

Offering a child a PSG jersey with Qatar Airways as a sponsor is a poisoned gift for their future!!!

Robin Cartier @cartierobin.bsky.social · 04/06/2025

It pains me to see young children wearing the jerseys of their favourite clubs, tarnished by sponsors promoting polluting industries dependent on fossil fuels, which simply compromise the future of these generations to enjoy football on a liveable planet.

And this is precisely the message I wanted to convey through this interview. Fossil fuels are the number ONE cause of climate change, YET in 2025, football maintains an intimate relationship with fossil fuels by promoting them instead of moving towards transition and decarbonisation.

However, PSG's success cannot be separated from Qatar's influence as owner and sponsor. It's impossible not to see the Qatar Airways sponsor on PSG shirts.

I'm not a PSG fan, but as a football lover, I was thrilled by the collective performances of Luis Enrique's team. This young team has realised the dream of thousands of fans and children and will continue to inspire future generations.

This interview can be found on the back cover of the newspaper, while the front cover is devoted to PSG's triumph. I find this contrast particularly striking.

A few weeks ago, I did an interview for the newspaper @humanite.fr. The article was published this week, a few days after PSG won the 2025 UEFA Champions League.

#NOSAUDI34 Are we going like our National Football Federations, to continue approving and legitimising FIFA's criminal decisions? Or are we finally going to have the courage, as the women's footballers have shown us, to OPPOSE a FIFA that is killing the planet, people and, football?

[OPEN LETTER] In a week, FIFA will make it official that the 2034 Men's World Cup will be held in Saudi Arabia. Is this the football we want tomorrow? How long will we continue to accept FIFA's decisions taken at the expense of the Planet, Human Rights and even Football?
