This is wild - somebody did a deep dive into the real stories behind this famous XKCD: sheets.works/data-viz/hol...
an XKCD comic showing a precariously assembled tower of blocks. much is labelled "all modern digital infrastructure." a thin leg down at the bottom is labelled "A project some random person in Nebraska has been thanklessly maintaining since 2003."

Air popper for life. I don't want oil on my popcorn, I want butter. Air popper, melt butter in the microwave, pour over, toss with salt.

This is a perfect thing to impose on people at a work potluck (that is how I justified buying the sour patch kids oreos)

This is not to denigrate any of my fellow middle aged women with pixie cuts, who look great by being cooler than me.

I had a pixie for most of my 30s and it was great. Super fast to style, lots of compliments from other women. As soon as I had a kid I went from feeling fun and flirty to like Jamie Lee Curtis selling yogurt so if it's something she's considering, I recommend doing it young.

Some say that leafy greens are good for you. But these researchers found that when you dry the leafy greens of the tobacco plant and smoke them, they cause cancer.

On one hand, they could have cut several thousand words from that article and made it better, but if they had done that they might have cut the environmental nonprofit director complaining about losing a parking space and i would have lost NIMBY bingo

I stopped supporting the Sierra Club because this is so common. I think the national organization understands climate change but is unwilling to rein in the local chapters, which are dominated by nature enjoyers instead of environmentalists.

The one place he's right is that I don't want to live around people who don't share my values. That tends to describe Republicans more than immigrants, though.

Two sides to the same coin. Every time someone I work with uses it to generate a starter SOP or form I mourn how you used to just be able to search for "[thing] template" and find something, now you have to use AI or start from scratch because even the templates are AI generated

I mean, less so now that search engines are all broken. Your options are either AI slop websites or reddit

I was in a business school class (that was my first mistake) where people were talking about using AI as a thought partner and bouncing ideas off it and like... do you people not have humans you can do that with? Bring back having friends!

1. That's just what it costs to build in California. You'd be hard-pressed to find cheaper units 2. There has been a massive demographic shift toward single-person households. Young adults not living with family, people marrying and having kids later. We do actually need this kind of unit.

The possibility that this will end in TACO is rapidly disappearing. I cannot overstate how devastating this will be. The entire decade I've worked in this field HUD has emphasized how we need to house the most vulnerable people and now 2/3 of them will lose their supports.
Headline: Trump Administration Expected to Drastically Cut Housing Grants

In a major shift, HUD’s plan would direct most of the $3.5 billion in homelessness funds away from Housing First to programs that prioritize work and drug treatment.

Even if you accept the government's framing of the case, Charlie Kirk was killed by a white Mormon man who met a trans person, realized how hateful & cruel the right is, and, because of his conservative upbringing, only had the tools to respond to someone he saw as a bad man with violence
