Bloody day in Lebanon puts fragile ceasefire at risk
A ceasefire was declared in Washington and Tehran, but, here in Beirut, the smoke rising across the city this evening suggests it has not yet reached Lebanon.

Our paper 'Exclusionary Transitional Justice? The Irish State’s Response to Non-Recent Institutional Abuse of Children with Disabilities' is out in IJTJ - with Sinéad Ring Perpetuating exclusion in inquiry & redress processes is a further & ongoing violation of rights. doi.org/10.1093/ijtj...

Exclusionary Transitional Justice? The Irish State’s Response to Non-Recent Institutional Abuse of Children with Disabilities.

Caroline Jagoe Sherman and Sinéad Ring.

ABSTRACT
In 20th-century Ireland, many children with disabilities were confined in residential institutions where they were made vulnerable to violence. The Commission to Inquire into Child Abuse and the Residential Institutions Redress Board, introduced in the wake of mass reports of non-recent institutional abuse, were supposed to respond to this cohort of victim-survivors. This article demonstrates the systematic exclusion of victim-survivors with disabilities, particularly persons with intellectual and/or
communication disabilities, from these transitional justice processes. We argue that the silencing of persons with disabilities represents an epistemic injustice within these transitional justice processes,
amounting to a violation of the right to access justice on an equal basis with others and an ongoing violation of the rights to investigation, recovery and reintegration.

KEYWORDS: Disability, epistemic injustice, inquiry, non-recent institutional abuse, redress

This should shake us to the core. As identity markers become the feature that *explicitly* dictates which law applies, we must speak out wherever we have any power. Don’t let this erosion, from an already discriminatory state, be normalised. It threatens our humanity in more ways than one

I’ve been a journalist for 27 years. I’ve reported major stories about mass surveillance, torture, war, the military-industrial complex, police black sites, etc. But this is the most important story I’ve ever had the horror/honor to work on. For it is a story about the current phase of a genocide.

This poem by @khawlabadwan.bsky.social took my breath away. We see this displaced concern all over the place. Turning away from the true violation and invoking the name of false risk, false protection. “We shall protect them. And we shall keep them unseen.” Alt text added
Ethics of Silencing

We have consulted the consultants of ethics.
They are gravely concerned.
How dare you include a photo
- a photo- from Gaza,
a place we decided not to know, inside our paradigm of utmost neutrality.
Neutrality must be protected.
From images.
From children who speak the tongue of our lingua franca-clear enough for us to understand.
What a scene.
Something we refuse to have made seen.
You see once it is seen, it asks something of us.
So we ask you instead:
Have you asked for their consent?
Until you collect their approval, we insist on their removal.
We shall protect them.
And we shall keep them
unseen.

Conflicts affect all, but persons with disabilities face unique risks. Accessible shelters, evacuation plans, and aid aren't just legal obligations; they are humanitarian imperatives. Parties to armed conflicts must respect and protect people with disabilities.

TIL about a memorial ceremony in Iceland in 2019 to mark the end of a glacier, changing the place name from Okjökull to Ok (jökull = glacier). Uncompromising wording on the bronze plaque: "This is to acknowledge that we know what is happening and what needs to be done. Only you know if we did it".
Bronze plaque saying "A Letter to the Future. Ok is the first Icelandic glacier to lose its status as a glacier. In the next 200 years all our glaciers are expected to follow the same path. A future in which we survived this co-struggle shimmers in this poem by @khawlabadwan.bsky.social “One day that's not here yet we will use the past tense announcing the fall of this evil We shall teach our children how humanity survived…”
Past Tense

One day that's not here yet
we will use the past tense
announcing the fall of this evil
We shall teach our children
how humanity survived,
how our memory, history,
language, order, and hope
had miraculously made it
through all the travelling bombs
And we shall hold them dear,
and hold them tight
One day the past tense
of the very far future
that speaks of this present
shall become victorious
Until we write in the past tense,
we sit in the present,
struggling together
in com-passion
against this forced amnesia.

We strugglED together
some of us shall say
with the heaviest use
and the hardest use
of the past tense.
