Inflating your personal story with lies or half-truths is a mistake, full-stop. Occasionally it can get you one level ahead; but the truth always comes out, and when it does, no one will ever take you seriously again. #scriptsky

So many writers know how to tell compelling, entertaining stories. But they don’t know how to talk about themselves in meetings. 😬 It doesn’t have to be this way. Interested in learning more? Download the free guide, “Telling Your Story in 60 Seconds”: www.carolekirschner.com/telling-your...

If you get a rejection from a cold email, be gracious. Thank them for their time and ask if they'd be open to reading future work. No reason to close a door just because you’re feeling a bit rejected. #scriptsky

When writing a cover letter, remember that your authentic voice is a competitive advantage. Don’t hide it behind corporate speak, show up with personality and a point of view. #scriptsky

Casting, costumes, music cues, editing rhythms, budget, schedule, rewrites -- one show generates more choices than a single person can personally sign off on. The showrunners who last figure out which ten or fifteen percent genuinely require them, and trust other people to handle the rest.

Don't write a restaurant drama because The Bear worked, unless you've actually worked in kitchens. Chasing another show's lane gives readers a comparison you can't win. Write from something you know from the inside. #scriptsky

What's been your experience with this? Have your peer relationships shifted as your career's advanced? Drop your thoughts below.

So if this is resonating, maybe take a few minutes this week and think about who you've lost touch with. It doesn't have to be much. A quick text, a coffee, a "hey, been thinking about you, how are things?" That's usually all it takes to warm a connection back up.
100
Carole Kirschner @carolekirschner.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
But the writers I've seen sustain the longest, most resilient careers tend to invest in both directions, up and sideways. And usually, they started doing it long before they needed anything from anyone.
100
Carole Kirschner @carolekirschner.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
I'm not saying any of this to make anyone feel guilty. Letting peer relationships drift is one of the most natural things in the world when you're heads-down building a career.
100
Carole Kirschner @carolekirschner.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
All of that is easier to weather when you have people going through it alongside you.
100
Carole Kirschner @carolekirschner.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
And then there's just the sanity piece. The mid-career grind is isolating in ways nobody really prepares you for. Development deals evaporate, shows get cancelled after a season, and the stretches between jobs can get long.
100
Carole Kirschner @carolekirschner.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
All because a relationship stayed warm enough that she was the first person he thought of.
100
Carole Kirschner @carolekirschner.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
He'd been sent a piece of IP and immediately thought of her, because it matched her sensibility and life experience, and he knew that because he actually knew her. They teamed up, co-wrote the script, and sold the project to NBC in a competitive situation.
100
Carole Kirschner @carolekirschner.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
Then she got a call from a writer she'd worked with on a show years earlier. They'd stayed in touch over the years, not constantly, but enough that the relationship was still warm.
100
Carole Kirschner @carolekirschner.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
And sometimes, a peer relationship turns into the opportunity itself. One of my clients, a really talented writer with strong credits, spent over a year unemployed during the current contraction. She'd pitched several projects that went nowhere and was genuinely burnt out.

Carole Kirschner @carolekirschner.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
It's a fellow writer who was in that room last season and can tell you what you're really walking into.
100
Carole Kirschner @carolekirschner.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
Then there's intel. When you're weighing a job, who's going to tell you honestly what a showrunner is like to work for? Not your agent, who wants you to take the gig. Not the studio, who's trying to staff the room.
100
Carole Kirschner @carolekirschner.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
When a showrunner needs a co-EP or a number two, they ask writers they trust, and those writers recommend people they've actually worked alongside.
100
Carole Kirschner @carolekirschner.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
Start with staffing. You already know a huge percentage of writers get jobs through peer referrals, and that doesn't stop being true once you're established. If anything, the ‘trust factor’ carries more weight at upper levels.
100
Carole Kirschner @carolekirschner.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
That’s a problem, because those lateral relationships actually matter more at the mid-career level, not less. I know that sounds backwards, so let me explain.
100
Carole Kirschner @carolekirschner.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
It's not dramatic. You just get busy. You're in a room, you're on deadline, and the organic stuff that used to keep everyone connected -- the writers groups, the late-night calls about a busted second act -- that can begin to disappear once you're actually working.
100
Carole Kirschner @carolekirschner.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
But, sometimes, at this stage, folks let their peer networks slowly thin out. The other working writers at roughly your level, the people who were your creative community when you were all coming up together, gradually drift out of your orbit.
100
Carole Kirschner @carolekirschner.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
That makes sense. You've got credits now, you're playing at a higher level, and those relationships feel most directly tied to your next opportunity.
100
Carole Kirschner @carolekirschner.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
Here's how it often happens: as your career advances, there's a natural pull to shift your networking energy upward, toward agents and showrunners and executives -- folks who can actually hire you or sell your work.
100
Carole Kirschner @carolekirschner.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
If that hits a little close to home, you're not alone. This is one of the most common patterns I see with mid-career clients, and it sneaks up on almost everyone.
100
Carole Kirschner @carolekirschner.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
You’re in need of a favor -- a recommendation, some intel on a potential boss, the lay of the land at a company. And a friend from way back knows what you need. Except, you haven’t spoken to them in years, so reaching out feels loaded, transactional and weird. It doesn’t have to be this way! 🧵⤵️
Stop Networking Up. Start Networking Across.

Conferences and film festivals concentrate serious writers in one place, which is most of their value. And if you can't afford to attend, following the event hashtag still works. Plenty of good connections have started with a reply to someone posting from a panel you wished you were in. #scriptsky

Tell someone when you finish a scene you're proud of. Share it with a friend, a partner, your writers group. Writers who keep that habit alive tend to have an easier time riding out the long, slow parts of this business. #scriptsky

Voice doesn't have to mean autobiography. Plenty of writers with unusual backgrounds write about something else entirely, and it works, as long as their particular take on the world is visible from page one. The lens matters more than the material. #scriptsky

Most of the best writers I know have a TON of imperfect, or even “bad,” early scripts in a drawer. You’re probably not the exception. Embrace that your first few scripts will probably suck, and focus on putting in the work, not making them perfect. #scriptsky

Never attach your script to a cold email. Offer to send it, and wait to be asked. Attaching it unrequested is a Hollywood faux pas. #scriptsky
