I just found a demo track called “Behind Enemy Lines” from the beginning of last year. It has basically the same lyrics as the final song, but basically everything else is different. It’s actually kind of cool, but I don’t remember it at all. Maybe I can turn it into something new.

Okay that's a really good change! For similar reasons, I'd also prefer it if people who want to get on my packs for musicians and labels would "opt in" by telling me that they want to be included! *hint, hint, nudge, nudge*

I work for a major record label and am also a part time musician. I release all of my own music independently because there is literally no value in signing a record deal for any artist.

I’m sad that OPM is going on hiatus, but it seems like those are good reasons. It must have taken up a lot of your time and those others things need to come first. Thanks for reviewing my album - and all those other ones.

The goal to fund Mark's radio station for a year is very close; sitting at about 78%. This is an enormously helpful, community driven station, that has given a lot of artists here some well-deserved airtime. Please consider to support it, if you're able!

Years ago, troll said of one of my songs, “this woman cannot sing”. As a trans woman, and given that he was doing his best to hurt me, I found that enormously affirming. (Also, to be fair, it wasn’t exactly my best performance and wouldn’t pass QC these days.)

Despite everything that’s going on, people continue to transition, to find themselves, and, in so doing, to find great joy. That seems like something to celebrate, and the perfect note to end the album on.

I regularly have the opportunity to hear baby trans people talk about those early milestones. Some are common and others are unique, but the happiness is genuine and infectious.

Carmine Rebellion @carminerebellion.uk · 16/06/2026
As I collected some thoughts about trans joy, it quickly became obvious that I wanted to focus on the early parts of transition. Transitioning is confusing and scary, but it’s full of wonderful, joyful moments too.

I started writing the song that became Fly Free (For The Hatchlings) by creating a new document and writing “Positive Song” at the top of the page. There are some pretty obvious reasons why all the other songs on the album are angsty and angry, but I wanted to have at least one with a lighter mood.
A photo of Mara wearing a red top, featuring a graphic of an egg in the trans pride colours, with a raised fist sticking out through a crack. Under the egg are the words “Fly Free”.

Then, even though I wrote it, it took quite a bit of practice to actually sing it. My songs often have a lot of words, but they don’t usually go past quite that quickly.

No Surrender was one of those songs where verse two was hard to write. The first verse came really easily, but a second one matching the same rhythm was a bit more of a challenge.

A few guitars are visible in the background.
The photo has a dramatic vignette effect, and a grungy, distressed look.

Writing in unusual time signatures can be tricky and I’m kind of proud that I got it to work well enough on “I’m Still Here” that I think a lot of people don’t really notice.

Carmine Rebellion @carminerebellion.uk · 14/06/2026
A lot of the songs on Delineation take a bit of a defiant tone, but there was something about repeating the phrase “I’m Still Here” that appealed to me. The weird little piano part in 7/8 time arrived separately, but when I had the idea to put the two together, it just seemed to work.
Mara is wearing a sleeveless red top. On it is printed an egg in the colours of the trans pride flag, with a raised fist sticking out through a crack. In front of the egg is the text “Fly Free”.
Sound treatment panels, light panels and several guitars are visible in the background.

I didn’t want to read the quotes myself because I wanted it to be obvious that it wasn’t my voice and therefore that they aren’t my words. I think my friends did a wonderful job and their performances really elevated the track, as well as sparking some new ideas.

Carmine Rebellion @carminerebellion.uk · 13/06/2026
The Age of Sin is essentially an instrumental track, but I built it around a selection of spoken quotes. Each quote was taken from either an interview with one of the last few popes, or from a written document published by the Roman Catholic Church, and read by one of my trans friends.

The UK is a largely secular country, but conservative Christianity has a disproportionate influence on politics, from bishops in the House of Lords to American evangelicals funding lawfare against trans rights and other “culture wars”.

I experimented with building up the music to something bigger and heavier, but ultimately I decided that the gentler, more restrained arrangement suited it better.

When I first wrote the lyrics to Existence I thought they were too bleak. I put them aside for a couple of months, but when I came back to them I realised that actually, while they are about a bleak situation, they are hopeful and comforting.

There are lots of trans people with health problems or disability, and many who can’t fight, or aren’t able to do as much as they want. Some of them do far more than they realise, by inspiring others, but as a minimum, just living as a trans person is a revolutionary act in the UK.

A friend talked about feeling guilty because, being largely housebound, she felt insulated from the effects of segregation guidance. Another friend was upset because they didn’t have the spoons to go to a protest. A third said she only found the courage to go because of the first friend.

Cross The Line was the first song on the first Carmine Rebellion EP, Manifesto. I’ve always liked the song, and since it fitted the theme of this album, it seemed like a good time to revisit it.

I wanted to say that trans people really aren’t that different to cis people. If there weren’t well-financed, genital-obsessed bigots trying to erase us from society, we’d just be living our lives and dealing with similar problems to everyone else. When you get down to it, I’m Just Another Human.
A photo of Mara wearing a white T-shirt with a picture of a tag, like a luggage tag, in which is written “Just Another Human”. Her arms are held out to the sides.
The background features three guitars (black LTD 7-string, red Solar 7-string, and a natural wood tele-style guitar). Hexagonal light panels snake up the right of the picture and across the top.

I wrote Fight Fire With Fire after I’d written some of the more downbeat songs on the album. I love Distressed Heart and Existence, but I wanted to make sure the album had plenty of loud songs too, so I deliberately set out to write something a bit more shouty. It’s not subtle, but it was fun.
Mara is looking up out of frame. She still has a trans pride flag on her left cheek. In the background a wall stretches away into the distance. Glowing light panels snake up and around acoustic panels and guitar hangers. A green PRS guitar is prominent behind her shoulder, then a Jackson Rhoads, then a Schecter, then more that are hard to make out.

There were two tiers of possible response to the express wishes of Henry Nowak's dignified family in the light of his traumatic murder. One humane and empathetic, the other inhumane and exploitative. This version of "Lyin' Eyes" (Eagles) is for JD Vance and those in the second. youtu.be/2J95CTmZUUM

It was played (in a very raw form) in the listening party at the end of the month and got a positive response. One listener commented “I love this song, but I hate whoever inspired it,” so I told them who inspired it: “it’s about trans rights”.

I love this song and I’m proud of it - it just doesn’t feel like metal compilation material, so I decided it had to go on the album instead. The song was also my submission for a songwriting challenge over at Home Studio Corner VIP back in April.

Shredding My Soul wasn’t going to be on the album. I’d already worked out the track listing when I wrote it, intending it to be for @rubyrockatansky.bsky.social’s trans metal compilation (see below). Except that what I ended up writing felt wrong for a metal compilation.
Mara stands in front of a wall of guitars and keyboards, hands on hips, wearing a black and white tartan skirt and a black top, with the text “why are you shredding my soul?” written on it.

The guitars are (left to right):
Jackson RR5FR in ivory with black pinstripes.

Schecter Apocalypse C1-FRS in Purple Reign.

(Barely visible) Jackson Mark Morton Dominion in Trans Black (not entirely coincidental, even though I bought it about 10 years before I transitioned).

Ibanez AEGB24E acoustic bass.

The keyboards are both N-Audio: one Keystation 88-es (semi-weighted) and one Accent (hammer-action)

Next up: Phantasm. It’s basically about propaganda, and the way so many people these days are driven to hate based on what see in the media, over the evidence of their own experience. Since I work in the media (although not in news) it always feels a bit personal.

The T-shirt in the picture is the one I wore at the protest against the ruling in FWS v Scottish Ministers. On the way there I made a note: “my progress pride heart T-shirt is looking distressed, but it feels appropriate right now” And that was the genesis of the song “Distressed Heart”
Mara wearing a black T-shirt emblazoned with a somewhat battered progress pride flag in the shape of a heart. The design was always messily painted, but it is now noticeably distressed.
In the background some guitars hang on the wall. A bunch of hexagonal light panels are being extremely purple, and a strip of LEDs at the edge of the ceiling are doing their best to display a bisexual pride flag. They’re not particularly good at, but don’t tell them.

I've been writing lyrics first a lot in the last couple of years, and it makes sense with this album since I had a lot of things I wanted to say. This song ended up with a lot of lyrical sections that had different lengths and structures, which led fairly naturally to the music doing the same thing.

The word "Delineation" obviously sounds like a Carmine Rebellion album/EP title. I think I made a note of it around the time of the FWS ruling last year, and I'd probably been staring at it a few weeks before it expanded into a chorus, and from there, into a song.
