🚨 New paper out! 🐢 Nearly 1 in 3 plastic particles ingested by sea turtles would have been missed using current monitoring protocols. ♻️ We also detected biodegradable plastic particles, raising questions about their fate in the marine environment. 🔗 www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

The science is undeniable: plastic pollution harms people and the environment throughout its entire life cycle. We already know enough to justify urgent action. Ignoring the scientific evidence will only worsen plastics’ impacts on human health and the environment. @scientistscoa.bsky.social #INC5.2

Next stop: Geneva in August, where negotiations will (hopefully) move us closer to an effective global plastics treaty that truly protects marine life — and beyond 💙

Over the course of the week, I had the joy of meeting incredible new people — thoughtful and passionate — and reconnecting with old colleagues and friends who continue to inspire me with their work and commitment.

4/ 💡 We call for: – Recognition of agriculture as a key marine plastic source – Stronger upstream policies & collection schemes – Inclusion of agroplastics in the Global Plastics Treaty

3/ 🌍 In the Mediterranean, up to 38% of the coast is agricultural land. Intensive irrigation, coastal farming & poor waste management = high plastic leakage risk. This pattern is likely to occur in many regions globally.

2/ 🌧️ Dry riverbeds (ramblas/wadis) act as plastic traps—releasing debris during episodic rain events.

1/ 🌿 Agriculture can be a major, overlooked source of marine plastics. Our new study shows that mulching films, greenhouse covers & crop netting can travel >100 km & reach the sea—especially after heavy rain
