Who is missing from the map? Our first DEBIAS paper with @carmen-cabrera.bsky.social finds that more mobile data don’t guarantee better representation. Assess before you infer. (doi.org/10.1098/rsos...) (de-bias.github.io/debias/stori...)

Mobile phone data from 13 million people in Spain—more than a quarter of the population—show that hot days reduce individual mobility, especially among older people. According to the authors, climate change could threaten the dynamism of cities. In PNAS Nexus: ow.ly/ip2u50Z3fgu

One of the most-viewed PNAS Nexus articles in the last week is “Extreme heat reduces and reshapes urban mobility.” Explore the article here: ow.ly/4NSI50YXGZy To learn more about submitting your own research, visit PNAS Nexus at ow.ly/tolx50YXGZz.
Multi-panel figure showing the effect of extreme heat on activity in Spain during 2022–2023. Mobility networks and monthly mean temperatures indicate heat peaks in July and August. Statistical models show that when the Universal Thermal Climate Index (UTCI) exceeds 40°C, frequent and infrequent activities decline, while trips to work or school remain stable. Mobility may increase at temperatures below 40°C when temperature is analyzed continuously.

Seeking to leverage the real time availability of mobile phone data, we (@carmencabarn.bsky.social & Miguel) have been tracking changes in Meta user counts, to assess the impacts of the DANA in Valencia Spain. Here a policy brief published by Pop. Europe 👉🏻 is.gd/5qucab

The 2024 Valencia floods hit close to home for me. By analysing real-time digital trace data, we can track population shifts and guide timely disaster response efforts. Check out the analysis I’ve been working on with @Fcorowe & @MiguelGLeonardo: shorturl.at/2VX4C

Last Friday I presented some first analysis of our ESRC project DEBIAS w/ @carmencabarn.bsky.social . In this first stage we are focusing on measuring and identifying key predictors of biases in human mobility data extracted from mobile phone apps. An unexpected finding 👇
