The Fourth of July was an ironic and bittersweet holiday for Japanese Americans incarcerated during WWII. The festivities provided a break from the monotony of life in the camps — but it was also a sharp reminder of the freedoms that had been taken away from them. ddr.densho.org/ddr-densho-1...

I'm deeply proud of my work on this brief. Dozens of Japanese American and other AAPI orgs are urging the courts to remember the lessons of the WWII Japanese American incarceration, and urge them to fulfill their role in our constitutional democracy to check the Trump administration's overreach.

Densho is a treasure, and its commitment to preserving our community's history -- in all its ugliness and complexity -- is especially crucial when the federal government is trying to censor stories of racism and injustice from the Smithsonian and other institutions.

Japanese Americans are angered and afraid by what we're seeing now. We know that in WWII, roundups of non-citizens under the Alien Enemies Act were only the first phase. The next phase was to target the entire Japanese American community, citizens and non-citizens alike.

I spoke with Jana Katsuyama @ktvufox2.bsky.social about how the Alien Enemies Act was used against Japanese American families in WWII -- and how President Trump's invocation of the Act today is allowing federal agents to disappear community members without due process. www.ktvu.com/video/1611992

I was part of an NGO delegation to Dilley in its first year. As I wrote: "I have previously visited the sites of Manzanar, Tule Lake, and other World War II incarceration camps. More than anything else, Dilley feels like an updated version of these places." www.themarshallproject.org/2015/05/21/t...

My latest column in the Nichi Bei: We know what happened when the gov't came for Japanese Americans and nobody else spoke up. It’s time to put some real pressure — especially on those with money or power — to show up with the courage that’s needed in this moment. www.nichibei.org/2025/02/in-1...
