A medieval manuscript has confounded scholars for centuries. Have they been reading it wrong all this time?

Happy birthday to Mary Shelley, born on this day in 1797 📕 At 18, she began writing Frankenstein, helping to invent a whole genre and giving us one of literature’s most iconic monsters. Not a bad legacy.
Black and white etching portrait of Mary Shelley. Her portrait is set in an oval, she is wearing a black off the shoulder gown. Her hair appears to be a dark brown and falls around her jawbone.

I thought I would miss today’s solar #eclipse, but things worked out in my favour and I managed to watch it. What a truly breathtaking sight.

The Cotton Genesis (Cotton MS Otho B VI, 5th century) was one of the tragic victims of the Ashburnham House fire in 1731. Today, we’re delighted to release new multispectral imaging of the manuscript, allowing us to read its texts for the first time in hundreds of years. www.bl.uk/stories/blog...

I had to pay a visit to my library’s closed-access stores today, and that can only mean one thing: revisiting some good old, dear friends. I especially enjoyed looking again at this catalogue from one of my favourite collections, where I first began training in codicology.

Ivan Sparling Jr.'s incredible World War I diary, written on cigarette rolling papers during his time in France, were recently given to the Library by Sparling's great-granddaughter Molly on behalf of his descendants. Veterans History Project donations like this one are so interesting and special!

"Copy, moon joy." 🌕✨ The #ArtemisII mission's stunning new images of the moon are making us think about the lunar maps created long before space travel was possible for humankind. This one is by Polish astronomer Johannes Hevelius (1611-1687), often referred to as the founder of lunar topography. 🧵

Rare Books and Special Collections Division. Polish astronomer Johannes Hevelius (1611-1687), often referred to as the founder of lunar topography, came from a wealthy family of brewers. He built an observatory in his hometown of Gdansk in 1641, and published an atlas of the moon titled Selenographia in 1647. This map is from that atlas.

I struggle to see how this policy engages with the root causes of structural issues affecting the Higher Education sector. And why is the same logic not applied to other public-interest and essential service institutions, such as energy and water suppliers, public transport, or council services?
