There are always exception to the rule but I think it makes sense most of the time. As you mentioned, having your readers figure out the order of the speech bubbles by themselves… that’s a big no-no 🚫

I don’t even remember who said that… maybe even that dreaded Scott McLoud, god forbid! (jk he’s ok) They said you had to be empathetic and put yourself in your readers shoes. You’re hosting a party in a way so you want your guests to be at ease & feel as comfortable as possible reading…
