Love these new @caltrain.com ads educating riders on the clean energy that makes Caltrain go. Vote YES on RTM and support this awesome and clean option in the Bay Area.

The first protected intersection I know of in San Mateo is out to bid this morning! It connects to unprotected lanes and sharrows for now, but it's a good step. The intersection has a stop sign today, so it's promising to see the city use a signal upgrade project to add quality bike infrastructure.

The case for the 76ers forcing LeBron to take the train is pretty strong. 165x the fatal crash risk to save ~20 minutes a trip. Not sure if these commute times are perfect, lots of assumptions here. Still, it's wild how unsafe helicopters are yet they seem common for ultra-wealthy folks.

Be careful out there on your bike. If you're riding a legal e-bike and hit by a car you might be blamed for anything after that point. This framing will continue to be repeated and it's maddening. The ND comment is wild in general but especially wild to blame a child for riding their bike legally.

Walk to your local post office, you might see a new mail truck!

This is one of the paths that enables me to efficiently walk from my neighborhood to the local post office. I really wish pedestrian connectivity was a higher priority around here. Every few months these get “fixed” by the property owner and then it gets re-fixed to look like this.

Great example of the effectiveness of raised crosswalks. Wish this was a more common solution in California. I do see them around but they need to be more common with how effective they are.

We're stuck with this situation in a recent project. Not ideal. This forces an awkward merge where there is still enough space to not take the lane and cars aren't really expecting someone to take the lane.

This stance is common on Nextdoor but isn’t backed by studies or the eye test. I asked the city for anonymized sales tax data to compare our ped mall to the parking-heavy 25th and 42nd Ave areas. No luck yet, but hopefully someday.

An example: The in-progress Delaware St. Safe Routes to School project narrowed it's protected bike lane from a reasonable 7' to a very narrow 5.5' in order to preserve a vehicle travel lane after the SMC Event Center objected to restricting car access to their site via 92.

Zooming in on San Mateo, this story doesn't change. The city has published GHG data since 2005, and its own plan states "in all years, the on-road transportation sector is the largest source of emissions." Yet the city keeps compromising its Bike Master Plan for parking and vehicle access.

The Burlingame PD determined the e-bike was being operated legally and the vehicle pulled out in front of them without space for the e-bike to react. Seems like an important detail that is missing here @rwcpulse.com www.rwcpulse.com/san-mateo-co...

The local Nextdoor discussion of "slower traffic keep right" equaling "anyone driving under 80 get out of my way" is a wild exploration of how normalized breaking the law is when driving. "I have places to be so I'm allowed to break the law. Also, it's fun!"

Expert artist rendering of how Palo Alto could've saved the start of the 49ers' season. Alma St doesn't need four lanes here. Traffic calm it with protected bike lanes and traffic circles, and crashes like the one that seriously injured Kyle Shanahan get a lot less severe.

I think Kivin is trying to make a joke but this sounds great to me. We usually call them "modal-filters" rather than "barricades" but other than that its a great plan.

4 minute walk from a nice big parking garage with lots of space and $65 monthly permits. Love it!

Learned about a new modal filter in my area from Nextdoor of all places. This road is parallel to 280 and this gate was installed when the neighborhood was built out to deter through traffic. We need more of this! I live next to a road parallel to a state highway and wish we had one.

According to their 2025 financial audit, parking revenue accounted for $2.3 million of revenue, up 26% compared to 2024. This is more than 10% of their annual revenue. They at least try to mention Caltrain as an upside but I think they misspelled it Cal Trans which is perfect.

The Belmont project looks nice! I don't love these bike lanes that merge with mini-roundabouts but if there is enough traffic calming I guess it could work. I hope they get funding! www.belmont.gov/departments/...

Expert artist rendering of new unprotected bike lanes coming to 5th Ave near Central Park in San Mateo. It looks like this paving project ends before B St but I would guess the city would be uncomfortable removing the angled parking anyway based on recent projects. Progress nonetheless!

On a street, faster acceleration in heavy EV vehicles is not a climate feature. It's a road safety problem. Climate solutions need to arrive faster. The vehicles themselves should be designed for the streets we want, not optimized for sub-4-second launches from stoplights. Also, go buy an e-bike.

I wish the public works folks would leave these cones here. Video of how far into the crosswalk drivers often go in the normal config. It also just invites people to run the stop sign with its wide sweeping configuration.

What a bulb-out looks like before the concrete, or a quick-build. A crosswalk repaint at Palm & 9th in San Mateo put cones right where a bulb-out would go. Drivers slowed, pedestrians got real sight-lines. I'm 9 months into advocating for the quick-build version and it can't come soon enough!

Chaos on the way to the train this morning. Cutoff by a u-turner that didn’t even look and then was following a car that was just ignoring stop signs. Here’s a picture of a flat tire rescue by Urban Arrow yesterday as a cleanse. This kids bike is getting too big to fit in this thing!

The bike parking at the San Mateo DMV isn’t great but I guess that’s expected. First time here in >10 years and was in/out in ~25 min so not too bad. Happy Monday and get out and ride your bike!

Celebrating a small win today. I went on a walk audit a while back and requested a Lead Pedestrian Interval at this intersection. We have LPIs elsewhere in the city and this intersection was just out of the zone that had them. Glad the city came through and made this intersection a bit safer!

The Stop Super Speeders Act (AB 2276) seems like a really great bill that I'm not seeing talked about much. I'm grateful that CalBike is supporting it. sjvsun.com/news/politic...
The big picture:The Stop Super Speeders Act, which is the title for Assembly Bill 2276, would create a five-year pilot program in Fresno, Kern, Los Angeles, San Diego, Santa Clara, Shasta and San Bernardino counties.

People convicted of severe speeding-related offenses, such as reckless driving and speeding over 100 miles per hour, would have active Intelligent Speed Assistance (ISA) devices installed in their vehicles.
What we’re watching: The act now moves to the Privacy and Consumer Protections Committee for approval.

What they’re saying: “AB 2276 will help to save lives and hold accountable those who continue to recklessly speed. I want to thank the public safety committee today for passing my bill,” Soria said. “Twelve people are killed every day on California’s roads, and 1/3 of those fatalities are speeding-related. Speeding not only increases the likelihood of a crash; it also dramatically increases the severity of injuries when collisions occur.”

Coffee available at a train station?! A revolution in convenience. Go @caltrain.com go! I need to pay attention in the morning and see if this truck is there. Not a great idea to get tempted by coffee at 5 PM.
